Village and Boulevard seek cup glory
failures? Monday will mark the fourth consecutive year Boulevard have appeared in the final of the Martonmere Cup (National Sports Centre, 3 p.m.), however, after seizing the trophy in 1993 defeats followed in '94 and '95, both times at the hands of Vasco.
And while they will create history just by taking the pitch, marking the first time a side has made it to the final four straight years, that will be of little consolation if they are unsuccessful in lifting the cup.
This time around North Village stand in the way of the Blazers, having eliminated the defending champions and stand as ever so slight favourites.
Village occupy a higher position in the First Division and have been much more consistent than their cross-town rivals, but have been on a trophy drought the past few years.
Despite being consistently among the top echelon the North Shore club have not held the Martonmere Cup since 1988 when they downed Hotels 1-0 in a replayed final and have not appeared in the final since 1991.
Their last whiff of any silverware came back in 1993 when they captured the Friendship Trophy, but since...nothing.
Both teams incorporate somewhat similar styles, electing for the short passing games, although Village tend to be a bit more direct in their execution.
Still, goals win matches and while Village look to the likes of Sean Dill, Jamel Smith and Kevin Jennings up front, Boulevard call on Rodney Bascome and the always dangerous Dwight Warren for the bulk of their scoring.
On the defensive side Boulevard rate the edge, having conceded just seven goals in five league matches, as opposed to nine on the part of Village.
The curtain raiser will feature Vasco and Dandy Town in a battle for third place (1 p.m.).
At least one Commercial Division team is certain of a place in the third round of the FA Cup third round next month, regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's six second round matches. The only all-Commercial tie sees Lobster Pot taking on Forties at St. John's at 12.30 in the opening match of a double-header. The second match sees Hotels playing BAA in one of two matches between Second Division teams. Somerset Eagles, who needed a replay before beating Robin Hood in midweek, face another unpredictable Commercial Division opponent in Fire Service in the second match at White Hill. Fire Service got by Hamilton Parish in the first round and will be gunning for another Second Division scalp. The opening match at White Hill sees Mariners meeting Somerset in another fixture that could produce an upset. Somerset have a proud FA Cup tradition, having won the cup nine times, but against a Mariners team with nothing to lose the young Trojans will have to watch their opponents closely. Mariners were the highest scorers in the last round, blasting winless Second Division side Prospect 7-3 at Police Field. Tomorrow's other two matches are at PHC Stadium where Wolves take on Paget at 12.30 and Social Club meet Valley at 2.30.
