Village end Vasco supremacy
(after extra time) Vasco's hopes of a record three straight Martonmere Cup triumphs were dashed at Somerset last night as Village moved into the final for the first time since 1991.
The match followed the same pattern as the last meeting between these teams just over a week ago when Village held a 1-0 half-time lead through an Elliott Jennings goal. But this time the result was much different.
Though Vasco notched a second half equaliser, it was Village who scored again when Michael Hansey's first goal of the season sent the league champions crashing to their first defeat of the campaign.
Smiles, hugs and high fives greeted Stuart Crockwell's final whistle and tomorrow night Village will know who their opponents for the November 11 final will be as Dandy Town and Boulevard square off at Devonshire Rec.
Village unsettled Vasco with their willingness to hustle for every ball and they came close to an early lead when Jamal Smith's seventh minute scorcher was slapped away by goalkeeper Timmy Figureido.
Six minutes later Sean Dill exchanged passes with Smith before hitting a volley from outside the box which dropped on top of the crossbar with Figureido off his line.
The goal Village deserved finally came in the 28th minute when, from a throw-in on the left, Figureido failed to collect at the near post and Jennings tapped in from close range.
Immediately Vasco had Paul Towlson warming up and he came on 10 minutes later for Billy Kirkpatrick in midfield.
There was an injury scare to Village 'keeper Nyon Steede late in the half when he went down and needed treatment and Dwayne Adams began warming up. Vasco lost a key man in the 68th minute when defender Kentoine Jennings was sent off for a professional foul on Sean Dill.
But even with 10 men, Vasco continued to look threatening. Shawn Smith connected with a header to a Sinclair Gibbons free kick and had his effort tipped over the bar by Steede who re-injured himself in the process.
This time Adams did come on as play was held up for a couple of minutes while Steede was carried off. When the match resumed with a corner for Vasco on the left, the equaliser came quickly as Voorhees Astwood's low shot was parried by Adams and Towlson followed up to score from the rebound.
Both teams had good chances late in regulation time as an overhead kick from Dwight Basden saw Adams tip the ball agianst the crossbar. Then substitute Corey Hill curled a cross against the bar.
Right on full time Vasco coach John Rebello was ordered off the bench for foul language after linesman Richard Knight called over Crockwell.
Extra time was just as close and a minute before the end of the first period, Village scored what would be their winner when Hansey got on the end of a cross into the box and planted a shot into the bottom far corner.
Irving Romaine, the anchor in the Village defence, went off with a gash to his head late in the second period but Village hung on against late pressure to seal their place in the final.
