Village star out for year
And only time will tell if he will ever grace the Island's soccer pitches again.
Wilson broke his lower left leg early in Sunday's contest against reigning First Division champions Vasco, when he came out the worse for wear after engaging opposing fullback Derek Stapley.
Both players challenged for the ball, with Wilson getting to it a split-second prior to Stapley, who caught Wilson on the leg, with the result a disheartening "crrraaaack'' heard round the field.
An ambulance transported Wilson to hospital after play was held up for some ten minutes while team officials and trainers tended to their fallen comrade.
There was some good news yesterday when the injury was diagnosed as a clean break, with the player undergoing a procedure at King Edward Memorial Hospital to placed a pin in the leg.
It is not known how much time Wilson, who has yet to be fitted with a cast, will require for rehabilitation and Village coach Wendell Baxter said that any decision on whether or not Wilson plays again will be left entirely up to the player.
The coach added that the loss of Wilson would certainly create a void in the line-up.
"Right now, especially with the college boys going back to school, he's definitely going to be a miss,'' said Baxter yesterday. "He was only just coming off an injury that had kept him out for a long time.
While several players openly targeted Stapley on Sunday, calling his actions dirty and premeditated, Baxter refused to join the chorus.
"I was across the pitch and it could well have been that he (Stapley) was going for the ball.
"I guess it was just one of those things, maybe a bit harsh but...'' Sunday in fact saw two players carted to hospital, with Somerset's Everett Wellman also requiring medical care. The veteran forward created a scare when he fell awkwardly on his head and twisted his neck during the club's match against Paget at Southampton Oval.
Wellman, who had earlier scored the first of Somerset's four goals, lay motionless on the pitch for several minutes before being fitted with an air-brace and taken to hospital.
The injury was not found to be serious. Wellman was treated and released, although he will likely miss Somerset's next match.
