Wanderers wrap up title in 10-goal thriller

No surprise here! BAA Wanderers clinched their second straight Commercial Division Group A league championship and fifth in six years on Saturday.

What had appeared inevitable for several weeks -- months even -- finally came to light after Wanderers romped to a 6-4 victory over Spinning Wheel at PHC Stadium.

The away team led 3-1 at the half on a pair of strikes from Steve Irvine and a Stuart Drake goal, while Des Minors struck the first of his three for Wheel.

Fireworks continued in the second half as Vince Chaves scored once and substitute Andy McCulloch added two more for Wanderers to offset a determined comeback effort from Wheel, who had Minors reply with two more and Johnny Nusum convert from the penalty spot.

Wanderers' win put paid to already dim hopes Island Rangers had of a `miracle' championship. Wanderers have an unassailable 43 points compared to 35 for Rangers, with two matches left.

Rangers, though, did hammer a nail in the coffin of an MR Onions outfit battling to avoid relegation to Group B, winning 4-1.

Onions held the home side 1-1 in the first half, but faded badly after the break, as Troy Berkeley and Theron Smith each netted twice for Rangers, while David Outtrin notched the lone tally for Onions, currently ninth and occupying the second relegation spot.

At Wellington Oval St. George's All-Stars yielded home field advantage, allowing Mariners to emerge with a 2-0 win, both goals by striker Craig Dixon.

Robin Hood stayed in the hunt for second place, downing Devonshire Colts All-Stars 1-0 on a second half strike from Adrian Arnold.

Confirmed for the drop were Forties, who fell 1-0 to Lobster Pot, with the scoreline not indicative of Pot's dominance, but more reflective of finishing that "left much to be desired,'' according to club secretary/player Mike Evans.

It was left to Tony Smith to settle matters in the second half.

In a strange and humourous twist, North Village Rams were crowned champions of Group B and immediately set about finding letterhead and a typewriter in order to petition the governing body against being promoted.

Rams beat Devonshire Lions 1-0 behind a first half goal from striker Allan Fray to clinch the first promotion spot, while giving themselves an impregnable lead in the standings at 35 points.

Nevertheless, it has long been known that they and several other sides among the division are not keen on moving up, hence the petition.

In any case an intriguing battle continues to unfurl for the second spot, with Fire Service (27 points), Valley (26), Bermuda Pest Control (26) and Wolves Pack (24) in the running.

Service switched places with Valley this week, going from third to second as a result of their 3-1 win over Pack, combined with Valley being held to a 3-3 draw by Prison Officers.

Troy Furbert erupted for a hat-trick at the Den, spurring the firemen to a 3-1 triumph with two goals in the first half and one in the second. Gary Peniston tallied for Pack.

Valley dropped valuable points playing at Malabar, initially rolling to a 2-0 advantage on two Bervin Thomas goals, but were helpless as Officers stormed back to lead 3-2 at the break behind scores from Charlie Fox (two) and Ed Lightbourne. Alfred Bothelo achieved a point for the visitors with the lone goal of the second half.

Pest Control continued their climb up the tables, punishing Somerset Extros 5-3 at the west end, with goals shared among Kwani Webson, Bruno Defransesca, Christopher Davis, Dudley Lightbourne and Anthony Francis.

George Brangman, Craig Brangman and Dwaine Richardson replied for Extros.

The remaining encounter featured a pair of cellar dwellers in Exiles and Belco, with the former emerging 2-1 winners. Allan Johnson and Johnnie Semoes scored for Exiles, while Kacy Butterfield had Belco's goal.

Two make-up matches have been scheduled for Thursday night at Devonshire Rec., with Devonshire Colts All-Stars facing Lobster Pot (7.00 p.m.), followed by a match featuring Exiles and Devonshire Lions (9.00 p.m.).
