Warwick call on Robinson to boost Counties defence

At least three changes have been made to the Warwick side that seized the Western Counties Cup from PHC in a thrilling match two weeks ago.

With several of their younger players off the Island on a soccer tour, the champions have moved to shore up their defence with the inclusion of another youngster, Sammy Robinson, as the second guest player.

Mark Ray is their other guest for today's match against Somerset Bridge at Southampton Oval.

A significant loss will be 15-year-old Dion Stovell, who scored a maiden half century and took two wickets last time out. Jason Williams will also be a miss as a primary attack bowler and middle order batsman.

As such the burden may well fall on allrounder Ray whose talent as a match winner should no longer be questioned.

However, the absence of several first choice players opens a window for Bridge who, despite various shortcomings in all facets, believe they have a shot at winning and have included Somerset fast bowler Francis Richardson as their sole guest player.

"We're going to do our best, we feel confident we can do it,'' said Bridge vice captain Corvett Lambert.

"We feel we have a pretty fair chance. We haven't played them yet in the league.

"We won't be taking them for granted, even though they have a lot of young guys, just like they shouldn't take us for granted.'' Asked how there could be such confidence in the camp considering that they have lost 12 out of 12 league matches to date, Lambert chuckled: "We've got to take it out on somebody.'' Somerset Bridge: Denzil Dill (captain), Corvett Lambert, Shannon Tankard, Jermaine Nesbitt (colt), Adrian Burrows, Darrin Dowling (colt), Brian Gibbons, Perry Saunders, Francis Richardson, Malcolm Raynor, Ryan Shepperd. Reserves: Clifford Simmons, Ezekiel Greenwood.

Warwick (from): Reginald Pitcher (captain), Daniel Morgan, Steven Bremar Sr., Daniel Caines, Mark Ray, Hoyt Zuill, Kion Butterfield, Quinton Jones, Blake Rayner (colt), Mike Stovell (colt), Sammy Robinson, Perry Scott.

Sunday has a full slate of Premier League fixtures, but with Western Stars already confirmed as champions the battle now shifts to that for the remaining three Camel Cup places. St. George's, Police and Southampton currently occupy the second through fourth places.

This weekend sees St. David's entertaining Cleveland, Southampton travelling to face Somerset, Bailey's Bay entertaining Social Club, Devonshire hosting Flatts, PHC visiting Stars, Warwick welcoming Willow Cuts and Somerset Bridge at St. George's.
