Warwick protest umpire's decision
against St. David's at Southampton Oval on Sunday.
Skipper El James confirmed yesterday that an appeal had been officially sent to the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control by his club, and he added that Warwick were satisfied their action was justified.
James would not be specific about why the protest had been made, saying only: "We have lodged an appeal and expect a positive reaction from the board.'' However The Royal Gazette understands that Warwick were upset because umpire Frank DeSilva allowed a disgruntled St. David's player, Dale Fox, to walk off the field following a dispute with skipper Herbie Bascome and then allowed him return to bat the last six overs which earned his team the draw.
It is understood that Fox and Bascome were involved in a long argument on the field, Fox getting upset because he had not been brought on for a second bowling spell.
During the dispute Fox is said to have threatened to walk off the field after which the skipper told him to go ahead and do whatever he wanted.
Warwick are understood to be claiming that umpire DeSilva was within 10 feet of the skipper and was therefore well aware of what was going on -- yet he apparently accepted the claim of another player that Fox had gone off because of an injury.
Later the same umpire allowed Fox to return to bat -- much to Warwick's dismay.
Warwick feel that he should have been ruled out of the game after having walked off the field.
St. David's were 163-9 in reply to Warwick's 179 when stumps were drawn.
