Way walks away with tennis hardware

singles title on a day of comebacks at the Coral Beach Invitational on Saturday.

Way fell 1-4 behind in the first set against second-seed Gregg Frigerio before fighting back to take nine games in a row on his way to a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Frigerio showed some resolve of his own, gaining his first and only break of the match when 4-0 down in the second set with a running crosscourt backhand but he could not sustain his form.

Way then made it a miserable day for Frigerio, teaming up with Mike Curry to take the men's doubles open crown 6-1 6-1 against Frigerio and his partner Alex Anderson in just 55 minutes.

Gill Butterfield and Kelly Holland were also forced to come from behind to claim the ladies' doubles open. They took the first set 6-4 against Marnie Johnson and Kathy Stuhler after trailing 4-1 and, beaten 6-3 in the second, seemed in desperate trouble at 5-2 down in the decider.

They broke Stuhler to 30 to pull back to 4-5, tied the match at 5-5 when Holland held her serve but edged behind again when Johnson also held. But a brief stoppage for rain seemed to clear their heads and Holland and Butterfield stormed back to win 8-6.

It was some compensation for Holland, who had earlier suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Johnson in the ladies' singles. Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles, second seeds Claire and Stuart Smith came from a set down to defeat top seeds Butterfield and Curry. They ran out 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 winners.

Butterfield finally succumbed to fatigue in the century mixed final as she and John Moore went down in three sets to Gretchen Devlin and Earl Leader. The latter lost the first set 6-3 but came back to win the next two 6-2, 6-2.

In the day's other final, Martin Zolnai and Dick Mount took the men's 45 doubles title.
