Wellman beaten by Cuban again

straight time on Saturday in the triple jump at an IAAF international invitation track meet in Birmingham, England.

It was also the second time that Wellman, recently named Bermuda's Athlete of the Year for the third year in a row, was unable to finish in top spot after a string of five first place finishes.

Queseda, sounding a warning for next month's Pan-American Games in Argentina, jumped 17.22 metres (56 feet, six inches) to finish first at the National Indoor Arena.

Wellman, however, leaped a respectable 17 metres (55 feet, 91 inches) to grab second place ahead of Maris Bruziks of Latvia, Vasily Sokov of Russia, Vladimir Inozemstev of Ukraine and Oleg Sakirkin of Kazakhstan.

The Bermudian began the year with five first place finishes at meets in Arkansas, Moscow, Grenoble, Stuttgart and Berlin, including a local indoor record of 17.47 metres (57 feet, 33 inches) in France.

Prior to the Pan-Am Games, Wellman is expected to compete in the World Indoor championships at Barcelona next week.

Wellman is the world indoor leader in events this year, ahead of Queseda and Sakirkin.
