It is a century since whales were a common sight around Bermuda but recent reports have excited scientists and fishermen alike.

This week, the boat Joint Venture spotted whales not far from shore. The crew reported the sighting of "three whales, and possibly more,'' three miles south east of St. David's.

But Ms Sheila Dempster at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research said that the whales could have been heading towards the Island as part of their migratory route.

Ms Dempster said that whales were likely to be humpbacks, which have experienced a worldwide population growth.

The latest sighting comes only a few weeks after a number of whales and a school of dolphins were seen off the Island.

Whale expert Dr. Steve Katona said that he could not be sure whether whales were returning to feed in Bermuda's waters until individuals could be identified.
