Willow cuts out to make amends

match against champions Southampton Rangers with their eyes firmly fixed on regaining the Western Counties Cup in this 60 overs contest (11 a.m.) And Vivian Simons says Cuts are anxious to remove memories of last year's first round debacle at White Hill Field.

"This is going to be a war, we want what rightly belongs to us,'' said Vivian Simons, who scored 98 for Cuts last Sunday against Social Club.

"We have nothing against Southampton, but we want to beat them in order to get a crack against Somerset Bridge (in the final), they took the cup from us last year.'' Indeed Bridge surprised many onlookers at White Hill field in an 11 run win where neither team cracked the century mark. The home team, boasting the likes of Arnold Manders and Anthony Amory as guest players batted first, registering a very beatable 78. But Cuts underestimated the severity of the batting conditions, with only three members reaching double figures and more importantly five failing to score at all, winding up with a total of 67 and surrendering the title they had won from Rangers the previous year.

During that match Southampton were undone by the spin of Simons and Kevin Fubler, both of whom captured four wickets. The pair may see quite a bit of action with pace duo Rodney Fubler (arm) and Vance Gilbert (hamstring) questionable and facing late fitness tests as are captain Dexter Basden (foot) and opening batsman Anthony Fubler (finger).

"We've got capable replacements if anyone can't make it,'' said Simons.

"Richard Basden would be the skipper if Dexter doesn't play and there are others like Dwayne Basden, Charlie Fox, Kevin Bailey who can come in. Richard captained the team on Sunday against Social Club.'' However, it would behest them to have all their frontline players at their disposal against the cup holders, who boast a strong complement of batsmen which offsets a mediocre bowling attack.

Rodney Fubler and Dexter Basden stand out as those Cuts would most want to have as can be attested by the former's league leading total of 40 wickets and the latter's 604 runs. Basden can also be counted on to provide a few overs of medium-pace as well as acting as a stabilising force.

VIVIAN SIMONS -- hoping to beat Southampton today.
