Wolves are on the prowl

after extra-time Diminutive forward Clevon Hill tore the heart out of Paget with two goals in the second half of extra-time to give Wolves a deserved victory in a FA Cup second-round match on Sunday.

The match, held at PHC, was one of six on the day, bringing the number of teams down to 16 for the third round next month.

Hill, the smallest player on the field, snatched what proved to be the winner after 109 minutes with a shot from close range following a cross from the right, and then he put the result out of reach four minutes later with another accurate blast from a similar distance.

Before Hill's brilliance, Wolves were forced to fight hard against a spirited Paget team that was to eventually lose their edge once player-coach Dale Russell was given his marching orders by referee Lyndon Raynor for a second booking after 104 minutes.

It was Russell who put Paget ahead 2-1 after 52 minutes with a fierce shot from just outside the box. Rio Peniston opened the scoring for Wolves after 35 minutes but Dean Ming grabbed the equaliser for Paget three minutes after the interval.

Veteran Dion Wainwright equalised for Wolves with a retaken penalty after 59 minutes and it was left for Hill's extra-time heroics to settle matters after the two Second Division teams fought furiously in regulation time.

Social Club 7, Valley 0 Second Division Social Club ran rampant over their Commercial Division opponents at PHC, scoring three goals in the first half and four in the second.

Such was the extent of Social Club's dominance that their young goalkeeper Sherjuan Swan often advanced into the Valley penalty box and took several shots at goal much to the delight of the fans.

His counterpart in the Valley goal Robert Lambe was busy throughout dealing with raids spearheaded by veteran Coolridge Bell, Shawn Laws and Winston Thomas who led Social Club's attack.

Bell, Laws and Thomas each netted twice while Social Club's other goal was converted by Dennis Zuill.

Mariners 0 Somerset 4 Mariners, who knocked out Hamilton Parish 4-0 to reach the first round of the FA Cup last year, never came close to an upset against former Cup winners Somerset Trojans at White Hill field.

Before the Commercial League team had time to settle, the Trojans had gone in front, with Lamaul Crofton hitting his first goal of the season in the fourth minute after a ball out of defence by Duane DeRoza set him up.

Everett Wellman made it 2-0 in the 15th minute with a goal from close range and DeRosa helped himself to the third in the 39th minute after a corner on the right.

The Trojans missed a host of chances early in the second half before Crofton scored again in the 76th minute when he beat the Mariners goalkeeper to a pass in the box and kept his composure to sidefoot home with his left foot from an sharp angle.

Somerset Eagles 2 Fire Service 0 A tenth-minute miss by striker Troy Furbert came back to haunt Fire Service as Somerset Eagles scored two late second- half goals to advance.

Furbert was put through into the box after Oscar Riley lost possession but Furbert shot straight at goalkeeper Jermaine Nesbitt.

Dijuan Simons had a close range shot saved by the Fire Service 'keeper before Furbert had another good chance for Fire in first half injury time. Bray Saltus and Frank Smith were involved in a mix-up when going for a loose ball and Furbert got through before Nesbitt advanced to block his shot. Eagles, who needed a replay before beating Robin Hood last week, finally saw off their Commercial League opponents with two late strikes from substitute Eddie Callender in the 77th minute and Sean Dill ten minutes later.

Hotels 2, BAA 0 Hotels advanced to the third round but were made to work hard for the win by a determined BAA outfit at St. John's Field.

In a match that severely tested the dedication of the most ardent fans, Hotels finally rose from the depths of mediocrity just enough to ensure their continuance in the prestigious competition.

Two inauspicious goals midway through the second half by Chris Sabir and Ricky Hill saw the home side through, but for most of the proceedings it appeared neither side had inklings as to how to score.

It was a far cry from the beginning, when Hotels' Joey Weeks forced a fingertip save from 'keeper John Doran mere seconds into the contest.

However, the early drama was followed by long periods of uninspired play.

Sabir finally brought matters to life in the 72nd minute as he scored direct from a corner on the right side, Doran trapping the midfielder's inswinging cross against the cross-bar but dropping it over the line on his descent.

Eight minutes later Doran again found himself wearing the goat tag, failing to hold onto a weak header by Hill of a Jason Smith cross and having the ball slip through his grasp.

For Smith though the day was bittersweet, as the fullback received his marching orders from referee Richard Knight for a second bookable offence.

Lobster Pot 1, Forties 0 Lobster Pot are the lone remaining Commercial Division team in the FA Cup, after they disposed of Forties.

A dominating showing in the first half resulted in a 26th minute score by Anthony Smith and in the end Smith's score proved decisive.

The second half presented a somewhat different scenario, as Forties came back with renewed strength and were unfortunate not to at least send the match into extra-time.

Robert Pattern and Stephen Cotton each came close to drawing Forties level.
