Wolves devour Somerset

Wolves annihilated the visiting squad from Somerset in the curtain-raiser at Devonshire Rec. field, surging into the semifinals of the Crystal Palace Youth Cup yesterday.

The home side, who defeated the west-enders 5-1 a week earlier, similarly manhandled their opponents, leading 2-0 at the break and adding further insurance in the second half.

Mike Dill, Walde Place and Reo Peniston accounted for the scoring, as Somerset's defence was put to the sword.

Known for his tremendous juggling skills, Dill demonstrated another part of his arsenal in bending home a corner kick after 10 minutes to spur Wolves into an early lead.

Place popped up to send home the second in the 28th minutes, while Peniston rounded things out 11 minutes into the second half.

Wolves' forwards Keemo Smith and Peniston made sure of a miserable day for sweeper Ryan Simmons and his defensive partners, while a back line marshalled by Nolan Walker proved most stingy against a feeble Somerset attack.

Devonshire Colts 2, PHC 1 A good goal two minutes from the end by Damon Ming gave Colts a hard-fought win at Frog Lane field.

Ming raced through on the right and unleashed a low, hard shot that hit the post before rebounding off luckless goalkeeper Jay Smith and crossing the line.

The goal was a bitter blow for a PHC side, who had battled back into the match with a second-half goal by substitute McLee Smith. For long periods, PHC looked the likeler to score again as Smith posed problems for the Colts defence with his agression. Colts led 1-0 at the half on a goal after 17 minutes from Kiama Hollis.

PHC had a good share of the pressure early in the second half. The introduction of Smith boosted their attack and five minutes after coming on he scored the equaliser 16 minutes into the half.

The goal came after a long ball forward was initially blocked by Colts 'keeper Thomas Smith. However, McLee Smith picked up the loose ball, ran it around a defender and scored into an empty net.

North Village and Paget had byes yesterday.
