World Cup bronze for `Dutchman' Douglas
winning a medal at a major overseas event on Sunday.
Sprinter Troy Douglas, now running for his adopted country Holland, won the bronze medal in the 200 metres final at the IAAF World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa, when he clocked an impressive 20.40 seconds.
The performance made up for the disappointment of missing out on a medal at the recent European Championships when Douglas was wrongly denied third place in a photo finish with a British runner. Douglas was subsequently banned for the rest of the meet after voicing his displeasure at the decision.
This time no British runner beat him though he just pipped Koji Ito of Asia for the bronze medal after both recorded the same time. Frankie Fredericks of Africa won the race in 19.97 with Gentry Bradley of the United States second in 20.38.
In the final men's team standings, Africa placed first with 110 points while Europe were second on 109.
Douglas is understood to be focussing on competing for Holland at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, when he will be 38 years old.
