World Cup partners in showdown

in the first of two semi-finals in the Lobster Pot PGA Match Play championships at Riddell's Bay today.

The two players, who will represent the Island at the World Cup qualifier in Jamaica in October, had to tough it out in yesterday's quarter-finals, played under a blazing hot sun.

Pearman, head pro at Ocean View, finally got past Belmont's Cornell Bean on the 19th hole while St.George's pro Swan was also taken to an extra hole where he defeated Keith Smith.

Earlier in the morning's first round Pearman had dismissed Dwayne Gibson four and three and Swan had breezed past Phillip Pitcher six and five.

Today's other semi-final sees Mid Ocean's Steven DeCosta take on veteran Eardley Jones.

DeCosta eliminated Norman Minors three-up in the quarter-finals while Jones put out Barry DeCouto by the same score. DeCouto, suffering from an inflamed elbow, had fired Monday's low qualifying round of three-under-par 67.

In the first round, DeCosta nipped Derek Douglas at the 19th and Jones eased past Darren Swan five and four.

Pearman meets Swan today at 12.03 with the DeCosta-Jones semi-final following at 12.12. The final is slated for tomorrow.
