Yesterday's press conference at the Bermuda Football Association failed to
North Village will go into this weekend's final league matches with plenty still to play for.
The fact that no ruling has been made suggests that the issue is not as clearcut as the association had been saying earlier this week after Village played suspended goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams in last weekend's match against leaders Dandy Town.
With the way things stand right now, Dandy Town hold a one-point lead over Village going into their final encounter against St. George's. And while Village, with a better goal difference by one, could pip Town for the top spot, only one team is likely to be celebrating tomorrow.
That is because while Town can settle the issue with a win, Village still do not know where they stand. But as far as they are concerned they still have a chance of winning the title.
As the club insists they did nothing wrong by playing Adams, they are likely to take that same course of action tomorrow when they meet relegation-threatened Southampton Rangers at Bernard Park, which means Adams will be the first name on the team-sheet.
"We're going to be playing and operating from the same stance as last week,'' Village assistant coach Robert Calderon confirmed yesterday.
"We think the BFA have erred and the fact that there is still no information coming out of their office supports that. Obviously it's not as clearcut as they want people to think it is and we're pursuing the league championship as if we've done nothing wrong.'' Despite Rangers' predicament, Village must be favourites to win, which would then leave them anxiously awaiting news from Wellington Oval where St.
George's take on Dandy Town.
Both matches have great importance for the teams involved, two chasing the league title, one trying to avoid relegation and the other bidding for the sixth Martonmere Cup place which is up for grabs between three teams.
A week ago Town could have wrapped up the title with a draw against Village.
Now they must win against a St. George's team that beat them in the corresponding fixture back in December before Town went on their 16-game unbeaten run.
The match is important for St. George's, too, as they must win to hold onto the sixth spot which would guarantee a place in the Martonmere Cup for the first time. A draw might be enough for both teams, depending on the outcome of other matches.
St. George's are presently on 15 points with Vasco but with a better goal difference. PHC, a point behind both teams but with an identical goal difference to St. George's (minus six), is the third team in the running.
The Zebras travel to St. David's to meet already relegated St. David's while Vasco are at home to Boulevard at PHC Stadium. PHC need just a point to kill Rangers' remaining hopes of survival, while two points will make it possible to grab the final Martonmere Cup spot.
Despite Boulevard's recent slump, they will remember that night in Somerset three weeks ago when Vasco dethroned them as FA Cup champions. Revenge will be in the minds of the Boulevard players.
A match of little importance will be the one at Somerset between the Trojans and Devonshire Colts. Colts actually have a very slim chance of winning the league title on goal difference, but to do so both Town and Village will have to lose while Colts will have to beat the Trojans by seven goals.
There is nothing to play for in the Second Division where the two promotion spots have already been confirmed. Those two teams, Devonshire Cougars and BAA, meet tomorrow at Devonshire Rec in what will be a preview for the Shield final next weekend.
In other matches, Hamilton Parish take on Paget at Wellington Oval, Somerset Eagles entertain Prospect and Wolves are away to Social Club at PHC Stadium.
Today's Commercial Division match between Park United and North Village Rams has been moved to White Hill field, starting at 1 p.m. There is also an Alliance Division make-up match between Boulevard and Prospect at 1 p.m. at St. David's. The match is rescheduled from October 16.
There are also two rescheduled matches for April 2 and 4. North Village Rams will play Lobster Pot at Bernard Park on the Saturday at 1 p.m. while on April 4 at BAA Field (8 p.m.) Devonshire Colts All-Stars take on Lobster Pot. The first match is rescheduled from January 29 and the second from March 5.
DWAYNE ADAMS -- Goalkeeper, left, will play again tomorrow for North Village despite being banned by the BFA.
