Young's ton gets Village off the mark
their first Commercial Cricket League victory of the season while St. David's tasted similar success over Jamaican Association, thanks to a rousing eighth-wicket century stand between Ernest McCallan and George O'Brien.
In Sunday's other match, Stan Francis snapped up his second consecutive five-wicket haul and opener Barry Richards slammed a half century to help West Indian Association "outpoint'' defending champions Leg Trappers, leaving leaders Watford Sports Club with the only unblemished record.
Half centuries by skipper Graham Strange and Chris Fleming, who featured in a century stand for the third wicket in an engrossing match at Nationals, just failed to set up victory, leaving Leg Trappers with three points to WIA's seven.
Simroy Crosdale, who claimed five for 53 from 12 overs, and Michael Campbell and Ian Coke, with two wickets apiece, had St. David's reeling at 52 for seven but the east enders, who chose to bat, were rescued by a 110-run stand between McCallan and O'Brien at Lord's, eventually winning by 39 runs.
McCallan's 74 included 11 fours and a six while O'Brien's 43 contained three fours and an eight -- a single, plus three overthrows, and a further four runs when another errant throw went to the boundary -- which guided St. David's to 189 for nine from 38 overs in a game shortened because of rain.
Coke, who topscored with 35 in Jamaican Association's 150, later stepped down as captain, handing over the reins to Norman Godwin, who made 27. Anthony Burchall was St. David's most successful bowler with three for 26 while O'Brien followed up his gallant knock with two for seven.
"It was an enjoyable game with guys on both sides `walking' when they were out,'' said O'Brien. "That's the way everybody should be playing the game.'' Opener Young's 107, containing 10 fours and two sixes, powered North Village to 206 for five from their 42 overs at Shelly Bay where rain proved only a minor hindrance. Young, who survived an early chance, fell in the final over.
David Scraders made 36.
Stars, who played one short, were bundled out for 60 in the 20th over, as fast bowlers Chris Caisey claimed four for 27 from 10 overs and Derek Bell four for 30, skipper Derek Smith topscoring with 26.
Left-hander Richards blasted six fours and five sixes in his 78 and other useful contributions from Randy Liverpool (27) and Jerry Callender (24) lifted West Indian Association to 205 for eight against Leg Trappers.
Opening bowler Colin Scaife continued his good early-season form with four for 47 from 13 overs while Strange took two for 27 from eight but the West Indians feasted on the unusually wayward medium pacers of David Hosier who took one for 61 in eight overs -- including 11 off his final over after the teams returned from a rain break to complete the innings.
In the end Leg Trappers fell 11 short of WIA's total, closing at 194 for six as Strange and Fleming gave chase after two wickets went fown for 38.
Strange's unbeaten 78 included five fours and a six while Fleming's 53 contained six boundaries, the pair adding 114 for the third wicket.
Francis and Jerry Callender did the bulk of the bowling for WIA, Francis' five for 62 coming from 17 overs while Callender had one for 80 from 19.
