Youngster gear for battle
All-Stars soccer match, which will feature the best from the west taking on the champions from the east tomorrow night at the National Stadium.
A total of 32 of the Island's best secondary school players will line up against each other in what has become, over the past two decades, the premier schools soccer match. Most of the youngsters will also hope to catch the eye of the overseas college coaches who have begun arriving for the match.
More than two dozen former All-Star players have received soccer scholarships to US college in recent years and presently there are about a dozen on scholarships in the States.
Despite its on-off-on status due to the current dispute between the teachers union and Government, every secondary school in the Island will be represented. The enthusiasm of the players has never been higher and they assure that their appreciation for the hard work required to stage this match will be displayed on Friday night.
The coach for the West team, Randy Benjamin, summed it up when he said: "I wish I had another two months with this squad. They are enjoying it so much and I'm having a ball, too. They are so keen to learn.'' The East will be coached by former Bermuda goalkeeper Sam (The Cat) Nusum who says his biggest headache is who to leave out.
"With so many quality players, our biggest problem is to put together the right combination. I wish I could play them all,'' said the coach.
Judging by those comments, an exhibition of high quality soccer is anticipated.
Leading the West attack should be returning Sandys player Kwame Tucker, a regular First Division player for Somerset Trojans, with Damon Francis holding the defence together and Tokia Russell directing the traffic in the middle of the park.
The East look set to counter with John Best up front and Omar Shakir a steadying influence at the back while Keith Jennings will attempt to get things clicking in midfield.
The secondary game is scheduled to start at 7.30 and will be preceded by the primary school match at 6.00.
