Youngsters steal the show in ocean swim
Saturday's final race of the Pepperidge Farm ocean swim series over 2.5 miles.
Although official results showed that Trevor Ferguson and Alicia Mullan were the top male and female finishers, they were actually beaten in the Harrington Sound swim by Ronald Cowan and Mike Hanson who were both too young to enter the event.
After Ferguson and Mullan came two other unofficial entries, visitors Megan Griffis and Lindsay O'Connell.
Said race director Patrick Hackenberg of the `rebel' entries: "There is nothing I can do to stop them from swimming in open water. Besides, the kids are all experienced swimmers and their parents were there.
"Due to the outstanding ability of these juniors, next year the Bermuda Triathlon Association will have to reconsider dropping the age cut-off to include some juniors. It's great experience for them, and it pushes us old people faster.'' Following Saturday's final event in the six-race series, Mike Cash and Sarah Mancell were declared the overall points winners.
Such has been the success of the series with more than 90 different swimmers taking part in one or another of the races, a two-person relay with each swimming half a mile, has been organised for September 14 at Horseshoe Bay (4.00 p.m.).
