Zebras denied by hero Swan
First Division Social Club sprang the FA Cup surprise of the day by seeing off nine-time winners PHC with a second half goal by Eric Dunkley at Somerset yesterday.
For the Zebras, second in the Premier Division standings, it was a sixth defeat in seven games, but they will still be wondering this morning just how they failed to score.
The decisive goal came in the 68th minute after PHC defender Dano Outerbridge had been dispossessed by Raymond Burgess.
Burgess cut inside from the right wing and even though his shot was saved by Zebras keeper Carlyle Crockwell, the ball ran loose to Dunkley who rammed it high into the net from 10 yards.
The key to the First Division promotion-chasers' victory was a heroic display by goalkeeper Shejian Swan who managed to get some part of his anatomy in the way of every goalbound PHC shot.
Social Club coach Fred Lewis said: "He's the best goalkeeper in Bermuda. He was outstanding, but so was the back line and really it was a great team effort.
"We were under pressure but we stayed together and stuck to our game plan. We knew we could beat them because PHC are not really that good.'' Social Club spent most of the first half hanging on desperately, struggling to cope with PHC's direct style.
In the very first minute Swan produced his first outstanding save, spreading himself to block Ricky Mallory's shot after the first of many penetrating passes from Kenny Mills.
Mallory burst through onto a Mills pass in the 29th minute, only for Swan to save his side-footed shot. Playmaker Mills created another chance for Vic Ball nine minutes later, but Swan dived at his feet to save.
Zebras sent crashing From Page 23 Four minutes before half-time, the same thing happened yet again -- Mills fed Mallory, but Swan saved with his leg as the striker tried to clip it past him -- and PHC must have begun to suspect this would not be their day.
Swan's spectacular goalkeeping exhibition continued when he dived to parry away Raynel Lightbourne's shot from the edge of the box in the 63rd minute.
After taking the lead, Social Club got a taste of their own medicine as Crockwell saved at the feet of Dennis Russell and then Russell raced through on goal again seven minutes from time, but shot inches the wrong side of the post.
Swan made his first mistake three minutes from time and it should have led to an equaliser. The keeper came out of his area and controlled a through ball, but dwelled on it too long, allowing Lightbourne to rob him and feed Ball.
Instead of shooting at the unguarded net, Ball attempted to pass and gave the ball away.
The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes as Social Club fans, players and officials celebrated a shock victory and a place in the last eight.
