Allrounders break duck thanks to Outerbridge ton

Opener Dano Outerbridge struck an unbeaten century as BC Allrounders broke their Commercial Cricket League seasonal duck at the seventh attempt, beating eight-man Jamaican Association by 50 runs, while the Spring Garden Cavaliers juggernaut rolled on with a crushing nine-wicket win over North Village that has carried them to the brink of winning the league title.

Cavaliers can seal the championship with a match to spare when they face the Jamaicans at Shelly Bay on Sunday with Forties, who take on Village, currently 14 points adrift.

Outerbridge's 117 not out, which included six sixes and seven fours, propelled BC Allrounders to 234 for six before they ended a run of six successive league defeats by dismissing the Jamaicans for 184 in the 37th over at Shelly Bay, thanks to Mitchell DeShields' five-wicket haul.

Outerbridge found useful partners in Nathan Webb (32), Worrell Bean (26) and Shejuan Swan (22).

Michael Campbell took two for 54 from six overs while Ian Coke claimed two for 61 from 13.

In reply, Jamaican Association did their best to overcome their numerical disadvantage, with skipper Alleyne Francis (36), Keniek Wallen (36), Campbell (24) and Daniel Edwards (21) all making useful runs, but the victory drive was undermined by medium-pacer DeShields, who finished with five for 28 from 10.1 overs.

"It was disappointing we could only field eight men — but there was no way I was going to default the match," said Jamaican Association manager Glenmore Barrett.

His opposite number, Kenneth Smith, was over the moon.

"My boys — and fans — are still celebrating. You'd think we'd won the league," he said last night.

"We're all enjoying our cricket. We're not complaining and arguing like we used to."

Jeff DeSilva, who is averaging more than 141 in the league this season, struck an unbeaten half-century as Cavaliers raced to victory inside 17 overs at Garrison Field after dismissing Village, who forced a draw in their earlier encounter, for 91.

Village struggled against Cavaliers' four-man attack after being sent in.

New-ball pair Rohan Henry and Lloyd Morrison claimed five of the wickets — Henry taking two for 19 from 6.5 overs and Morrison three for 33 from 12 — and the demolition job was completed in the 35th over as Craig Smith snapped up three for 24 from 11 and Fernando Paul two for 12 from four.

Opener David Scraders (24), number three Daren Davis (21) and Rudy Smith (15) were Village's chief run-getters.

DeSilva, whose 55-ball unbeaten 51 included three sixes and three fours, added 73 for the first wicket with Donovan Livingston and 19 for the second with James Pace (seven not out). Randy Smith (one for 12 from four) claimed the only wicket when he trapped Livingston lbw for 29.

"In six league matches this year Jeff DeSilva has had scores of 15, 166 not out, 128, 0, 64 not out and 51 not out," said Cavaliers' spokesman Richard Foulds.

"That's 424 runs at an average of over 141. He also bowls useful medium pace and occasional spin when required and is an excellent fielder. The runs he scores are at the top of the order when the bowlers are fresh and the ball is new. Jeff has played the principal role in what is shaping up to be the most successful season Cavaliers have had."

Added Foulds: "No one in the Village batting line-up could get much of a start due to the quality of the bowling, with Craig Smith and Fernando Paul carrying on the good work of the openers, Rohan Henry and Lloyd Morrison.

"Each bowler took wickets and each had an economy rate of three runs or less per over. This was backed up by some excellent catching, not one catch was put down in an immaculate display from Cavaliers in the field.

"The catch by Alan Boyce behind the stumps to dismiss Reggie Benjamin deserves special mention: a tumbling, one-handed effort from a thick edge. Alan has been ever-present in the team this year and if there is a finer wicketkeeper in the league then I have not seen him."

Said Village skipper Allen Walker: "Lloyd and Craig bowled very tight. We were able to get contributions from David Scraders (24) and Daren Davis (21). Chasing 92, Donovan and Jeff provided them with a great start as they put on 73 for the first wicket. Spring Garden have been the team to beat this season.

"We were all thankful to have umpire Emmerson Carrington as the game was played under an even playing field."
