BAA Wanderers fire early season warning

BAA Wanderers continue to lead the Commercial Division Group A after two rounds of matches as Forties became the latest victims of the defending champions.

Wanderers roared into a 2-0 lead in the first half and ended up cruising to a 3-1 triumph, giving them a maximum six points from two matches.

Johann Moik, Michael O'Connell and Carl Sharman each got on the scoresheet for Wanderers, while Andy Robinson notched a consolation goal for Forties.

Keeping pace with the leaders were Island Rangers, who rebounded following a shock midweek FA Cup defeat at the hands of Valley, downing Mariners in a goal feast at White Hill Field.

Rangers won 4-3 behind a pair of goals from Blaine Outerbridge, with single strikes coming from Wendell Anderson and Sean Symonds.

Mariners' Richard Correia hit a hat-trick in a losing effort, his second such feat of the season.

In a battle of the unbeatens, Devonshire Colts All-Stars and St. George's All-Stars fought to a 1-1 draw at the east end.

Devonshire grabbed a first half lead through Harrison Trott but St. George's replied in the second half through Sinclair Smith.

The other Group A fixture saw Spinning Wheel record their first win of the season as they battered KPMG 4-1.

Striker Des Minors was in top form, cracking a hat-trick, while a Nick Carter own goal aided Wheel's cause. Phil Thorne scored the lone goal for KPMG.

Meanwhile, in Group B, North Village Rams and Valley each won, creating a tie at the top of the standings.

Rams got past Belco 3-1 at home as Ralph Bean, Milgrove Romaine and Richard Robinson each found the back of the net. Oscar Samuels notched a consolation effort for Belco.

Valley engaged in a titanic struggle with Devonshire Lions before finally laying their game opponents to rest, winning 4-3.

The introduction of player/coach Ashton Thomas in the second half appeared to turn the tide in favour of Valley as he gave stability to the defence.

Timmy Telford (two), Kevin Isaac and Roger Hall scored for Valley, while Kevin Hodgson (two) and Donald Norford were Lions' marksmen.

Valley and Rams both have six points as well as identical goals for and against, creating a deadlock at the top.

Also with six points -- but with an inferior goal difference -- are Bermuda Pest Control, who dispatched Fire Service 2-1.

A late goal by Dudley (Dogs) Lightbourne proved the difference after Edson Difranc had put Pest Control ahead, only to have Wendell Simmons equalise from the penalty spot.

Wolves Pack grabbed their first points of the new campaign at the expense of hapless Exiles, mauling the Cable and Wireless outfit 9-4 at Shelly Bay in a match that saw three players register hat-tricks.

Gary Peniston and Samuel Lambe both managed triple hauls for Pack, while fleet footed striker Edwin Ford turned the trick for Exiles.

However, Pack had too much firepower with Casey Burgess (two) and Kirk Douglas aiding Peniston and Lambe.

Johnnie Simoes scored the other goal for Exiles, who have now conceded 15 goals in their two league matches and sit at the bottom of the table.

A local derby at the west end witnessed Somerset Extros and Prison Officers battle to a 3-3 dra, in a match in which Officers never led. Douglas Durrant (two) and Donnie Simmons were on target for Extros, but Officers had the answers, with Brian Brangman, Charlie Fox and Ed Lightbourne each scoring.
