Barras happy that experience paid off

2008 CD&P Grand Prix champion Tom Barras will leave the Island a happy man after winning the annual cycling spectacle at the sixth time of asking.

The Englishman, who had attempted to snatch this particular title from rivals five times prior to his triumph, did so in emphatic fashion as he won the first two stages of the annual Grand Prix and placed second in the time trial to take top honours.

Second place went to Bermuda's Garth Thomson who won the time trial stage, with Barras' teammate Marc Perry finishing third.

And even with a change in the way results were shown; allocating points instead of times to determine placings, it didn't matter to Barras as he was some six points clear of the nearest competitors.

Barras reckons that with a beautiful country and lovely organisation, he will be sure to come back next year.

"This was my sixth time riding in this event, so I'm rather a veteran of it," said Barras.

"I've had two fourth place and a fifth place finish in the past as my best finishes so I knew what to expect.

"This year they changed the format from previous years, but from my point of view, the overall weekend and organisation was fantastic.

"We would certainly like to come back and race next year if the invite is there because it is a beautiful place and the experience was phenomenal."

The champion even welcomed the prospect of Bermudian riders joining him in the United Kingdom, and believes that some would do well in competing on the courses abroad.

"If any of the local riders wanted to come over and ride with us, they would be most welcome, no doubt about it," Barras continued.

"And I think that the standard that some of the Bermudian riders have, they would integrate quite well in the UK.

"We would also like to send a thank you out to our hosts while we were here and the organisation of the race as they played a major part in us being here and it means a lot to us."
