Bascome pushes for medal glory in Bahamas
Junior track athlete Jordan Bascome was breathing down the neck of Naeemah Isidora after the first day of a rain-hit CAC Age Group Championships in Freeport, Bahamas.
Bascome, who is competing in the girls 11-12, was in second place after amassing 1589 points on Thursday, 16 points behind Isidora from the Netherland Antilles.
Bermuda's other representative in this age group, Aaliyah Nolan, was in eighth place, 133 points behind Bascome.
Only two athletes can compete per age group, with the groups being 11-12 boys and girls, and 13-14 boys and girls, totalling eight athletes.
The Championships are a multi-event competition, with each athlete having to compete in all the events.
The 11-12 boys will compete in the 60 metres and 1000m, long jump, high jump and baseball throw, while the 11-12 girls will do the 60m, 800m, long jump, high jump and baseball throw.
In the 13-14 boys age group, athletes will compete in the 80 and 1200m, 80m hurdles, long jump, high jump, baseball throw and shot put. Meanwhile in the 13-14 girls age group will participate in the 80 and 1000m, 80m hurdles, long jump, high jump, baseball throw and shot put. Bascome won the high jump even with a leap of 1.47m with Nolan being tied in sixth with a jump of 1.3 metres.
The pair then got vital points in the 60m dash with Bascome placing sixth and Nolan 13th.
In the third and final event of the day, it was Nolan was took the spotlight with a fourth place in the baseball throw while Bascome finished 19th.
Bruce DeGrilla and Dale Eve were also making inroads to the podium on the first day with the two neck and neck through three events with DeGrilla in fifth with 3006 point and Eve in sixth on 2959.
Both are within striking distance of the leader Dudly Boeldak who has 3223 points.
DeGrilla won the boy's long jump with a jump of 6.56m while Eve was close behind in sixth with a leap of 5.89m.
Eve also put in a good performance in the boys shot put, placing fourth with DeGrilla finishing in 22nd.
In the boys 11-12, David Jones and Jahmari Sutton have long treks ahead of them if they are to make up the difference in their quest for medal. Jones is currently in 13th position, 464 points behind the leader while Sutton has 1480.
In the girls 13-14, Esaiah Lister and Mahila Weeks are 22nd and 23rd at the end of day one on 1951 and 1933 points respectively. The females are in sixth position, while the males are in fourth heading into the second day.
Overall combined, the Island is in fifth place.
