Moto leaders widen the gap

Several class leaders opened up significant point gaps over the weekend with victories in round nine of the Bermuda Motor Racing Club's (BMRC) season.

Tamia Place, Wytiko Showers, Tony Grant, Keanu Wilson and Shae Darrell all pulled away from their rivals with consistent rides to all but engrave their names on their respective trophies.

While all leaders in each category did the 'double', it has been the inability of the chasing packs to apply pressure that has seen the dramatic swing in points in recent weeks.

Place and Showers won both of their respective races in the Minibike and GP80 classes while Place increased her lead to 156 points over second placed Serene Williams who finished with two seconds. Showers' lead is now 139 points over Jazari Caisey who could only manage a third and second.

Shae Darrell's lead in the GP 70 class is now 131 points over Haley Place who grabbed two seconds, while Keanu Wilson went 56 points clear of Cyril Whitter who didn't race over the weekend in the 600cc category.

In the Scooter class, Jeneko Place returned to the track with two seconds but Jordan Fletcher's push for first place suffered a dent as leader Kenneth DeSilva grabbed both wins.

Fletcher finished with a third and fourth.

In the GP125 class, DeGrilla Jr. now has a lead of 26 after Andrew DeCosta and Cody Sousa-Saints split second and third place honours.

DeCosta is the closest to the leader while Sousa-Saints is 60 points back.

Khano targets play-off spot

New England Revolution's Khano Smith insists his team still have a slim chance of making the MLS play-offs this season.

The Revolution ended their three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders on Saturday to move up to sixth in the Eastern Conference, and Smith believes a strong finish to the season could see them gatecrash the play-offs.

"We've got to go on a run – it's not impossible," Smith told the Boston Globe.

"It's going to be hard but it's doable. We just have top go and a run like we did in those eight games. We've probably got to win at least six of our last nine, and that's possible.

"We need to produce more goals. I don't think we're creating enough chances . . . we need to be the one's who are dominating people, like we used to."

Bermuda international, Smith, has played 107 games and scored nine goals for Revolution in the play-offs and regular season since joining them in 2005. This campaign has seen him fill in at left-back due to the team suffering from a number of injuries and suspensions.

Bell records first shut-out

Goalkeeper Cheyra Bell capped off a winning weekend by being named Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week after helping Howard University notch their first win of the season, away to Youngstown State.

Having lost their opening two matches to George Mason, Wagner and Temple, Howard got the win courtesy of Retha Koefed, who was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week.

It was Bell's first shut-out.

Koefoed, a sophomore from Maryland, captured attacking honours with her game-winning double-overtime goal.
