BFA miss out on cash gift

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) have missed out on CONCACAF's $10 million funding which is to be distributed to 11 countries in the region.

The money, handed to CONCACAF from FIFA, will be targeted at helping leagues in Barbados, El Salvador, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Suriname and Trinidad, seeking to bolster areas from youth and referee programmes to coaching education.

In return, the leagues will be required to establish long-term marketing and sponsorship programmes, including television and new media rights.

CONCACAF president Jack Warner said: "This is a dream come true for 11 of our member countries. It will surely help to lift the bar of football in these countries. My sincere hope is that the governments and business organisations join with us in this FIFA initiative that will take the sport to even greater heights."

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) general secretary David Sabir said football's local governing body were "not shocked" to have not been included on the list of recipients.

"As you can see there are about 20 other CONCACAF nations who did not make the list either," he said. "I wouldn't say we're disappointed, it's a family thing and I guess you just have to wait your turn."

The "Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF" development initiative was approved by Warner last week and will get its full launch at the May 11 CONCACAF exutive committee in New York and the confederation congress in Bahamas on June 1.
