Bike boom continues
Bermuda's cycling boom is continuing with over 70 riders taking part in the first road race of the Bermuda Bicycle Association's 2010 season on Sunday.
Both of the male category races had fields significantly larger than last year, making for some competitive racing.
In the Male 'A' race, Brian Drea of Team Madison won a sprint for the line after 32 miles of racing had done little to reduce the size of the pack.
With attacks initiated and countered by the three big teams of Madison, Winners Edge and Altree Bicycle Works for the majority of the race, it all came down to the final straightaway for the sprint.
And with an early jump, Drea was able to open a gap on the chasers and secure the victory.
The Male 'B' race saw a similar finish when Daren Dowling surprised the remaining riders with almost half a mile to go to the line.
A brief hesitation by the peloton before giving chase allowed him enough of a lead to cross the line alone, leaving the rest of the field to fight for second.
Sole competitor in the Female 'A' race, Karen Bordage (Winners Edge), rode a strong race, sticking with the top men right to the finish line.
The Female 'B' race was won by Vicki Furness of Altree Bicycle Works ahead of Halyley Evans (Team Madison).
Other category winners were Daniel Oatley (Junior 'A' – Altree Bicycle Works), Christian Oatley (Junior 'B' – Altree Bicycle Works) and Kion Richardson (Junior C). Next up on the BBA's calendar are two time trials (April 4 and 11) and then a criterium in Hamilton on April 25.
