Blankendal can't lose in election race

Cal Blankendal is in the kind of position politicians dream about. Whatever happens at tonight's Bermuda Football Association AGM, he cannot lose.

The only candidate for first vice-president, Blankendal is running on presidential candidate Larry Mussenden's 'Trio Ticket' bid. But he'll still be first vice-president if the other candidate, Mark Wade, is elected.

With current first vice-president Lee Holder standing down, Blankendal will run unopposed.

And Dandy Town's director of football, who has previously held the job he is running for this time around, believes the voters cannot do wrong given the pedigree of the two candidates.

"Both are passionate, intelligent, committed, honest, frank and have a clear view of how the association should go forward," Blankendal said of the two presidential candidates.

"They also have differences with Mussenden having experienced all that FIFA, the BFA and the Government of Bermuda have to offer and require.

"Wade is also experienced, having served as club coach, vice-president and youth committee member at various times. A path similar to one I have been fortunate to follow.

"Having been groomed by both Mussenden and Wade during my initial years as the BFA youth chairman, I have nothing but praise and admiration for both parties. At all times they were willing to impart their experience and views on any matter."

Ultimately though Blankendal is backing running-mate Mussenden to come out on top, and thinks the former president's previous experience will be the deciding factor.

"I would select Mussenden because the BFA leadership is all about managing a business entity which is centred on grass-roots participation and national team performance," said Blakendal.

"In the middle lies public partnerships (Government) corporate partnership, the media, parents, the general public, FIFA, CFU, Concacaf and last but not least the 21 voting affiliates and technical development. I personally see Larry having the edge in that area.

"If I were to select a coach for my team I would take Wade over Mussenden hands down but if I had to select a president of my club, I would select Mussenden.

"The job of president takes more then the general public sees or would experience.

"Larry may not have played in a FA Cup final, been a league winner or coach but he has presided over one of the most successful periods of the BFA including the building of the BFA Field among but a few things to have happened.

"The affiliates will have the final say but it is Bermuda who will be the beneficiary of either candidate, as we face uncertain economical and political times. They have the ability to keep football via the BFA as Bermuda's number one sport."
