Borden's champagne campaign
Delyone Borden has reflected on his phenomenal first season as St. David's captain after winning the Premier Division title and retaining the Eastern Counties Cup.
The 24-year-old all-rounder became the first St. David's skipper to lift the 50-over league title for eight years on Sunday after the East Enders beat Police at Lords.
It followed on from his team's Eastern Counties success against Bailey's Bay at Sea Breeze Oval the previous day when Borden played a real captain's innings to support century man OJ Pitcher, scoring a resilient 42.
And the Bermuda international admits he could have hardly hoped for a more spectacular start to his St. David's captaincy.
"I'm a young captain and I'm still learning but it's certainly been a nice way for me to start – it really couldn't have been any better," Borden said.
"Our hard work has really paid off this season but the level of our success has not surprised me at all. We've always had a good team but we've just been lacking in certain areas. But this year we've put it together and it's been working for us."
Borden showed true grit when he came to the wicket with the Islanders wobbling at 35 for four against Bay in the Counties match and put on a mammoth 196-run stand with Pitcher (146 not out) to deny their rivals any chance of victory.
"To be honest as captain you do feel a little bit more responsibility when you go to bat.," Borden said. "You thrive on situations like that when you have to go out there and tough it out for the team."
He also praised the contribution of former St. David's captain Lionel Cann for his support and advice throughout St. David's' trophy laden campaign.
Cann, who seems to thrive on the big occasion, dragged the Islanders back from the brink of defeat on Sunday by hitting an unbeaten 76 against Police, after arriving at the crease with his team reeling on 33 for five.
"Lionel is always a guy to turn to when I'm in jam or unsure about what to do," he said. "He's been in the game for a long time and is someone I turn to for advice."
Borden missed Bermuda's defeats against Uganda in the Intercontinental Shield and one-day match because of personal reasons, but insisted he still wanted to play for his country in the future.
"I'm looking to play for Bermuda again but I have a few personal things to deal with so I've got to sort them out first," he said. "But in the future I'm definitely looking to play for my country again."
n Bermuda under-13 players Charles Marshall, Delray Rawlins and Cejay Outerbridge were selected in an All-Star squad at the recent St. Kitts and Nevis Invitational under-13 tournament.
The squad was set-up with the intention of giving the players a chance to challenge the West Indies under-15 team or another regional squad in the near future.
Marshall helped his Team Blue beat Team Red by four wickets at the weekend with a knock of 31, the highest score of the game.
