Bromby second in regatta

Bermuda Olympian Peter Bromby finished second at the Tomahawk Regatta at the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club in New Jersey, over the weekend.

Relying on New Jersey-based talent as crew, the veteran sailor finished behind local skipper Rick Merriman while former Olympic gold medallist Mark Reynolds took third position.

Earlier this year Bromby placed third overall at the prestigious Bacardi Cup Star Class regatta in Miami.

Jones third in Tour tourney

Nick Jones, son of Bermuda golf pro Eardley Jones, has placed third in the championship flight of a Golf Channel Amateur Tour event.

Jones fired a three-over par 75 at the 6,773-yard Grand Cypress GC New Course at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando Florida.

Starting on the back nine, he posted three successive birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15, but three bogeys meant he made the turn at even par.

He recorded two more birdies on the front after bogeys on one and two but finished double bogey, bogey on the last two holes. The winner fired 72 and the second place golfer, 74.

Jones is now tied for fifth on the Callaway Golf Order of Merit on the Golf Channel tour after playing in six events, having won one tournament and placed second and third in two others.

Healy in Windies squad

Bermuda's Tom Healy has been named in a West Indies rugby squad to play in the Abbotsford International Sevens Tournament in Canada next month.

The Windies side will compete against Canada, Kenya as well as several top club sides in the tournament in Greater Vancouver, from July 19-July 26.

Burgess on losing side

Bermuda international footballer Tyrell Burgess couldn't prevent Vancouver Whitecaps from slipping to defeat away at Portland Timbers in the USL-D1.

Whitecaps lost 1-0 with Burgess making his third appearance of the season as a second-half substitute in Saturday's match.

Bridge team hopes dashed

Hopes of the Bermuda bridge team travelling to Sao Paulo, Brazil in August to represent the Caribbean Zone in the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup World team championships have been dashed.

In the final of the regional qualifier, the Island team were beaten in all four sessions by hosts Guadeloupe over the weekend.

Earlier the team of Alan Douglas, Sven Pride, David Cordon, John Burville, Bill Tucker and Kevin Comeau had triumphed over Trinidad and Tobago to advance to the final.
