Caribbean league won't involve Bermuda

A new Caribbean league involving clubs across the region will not include Bermudian teams, the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) confirmed yesterday.

The Puerto Rico Football Federation are behind the league with USA Today reporting yesterday that clubs from Trinidad, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Haiti, Antigua, Guyana, Dominica and Bermuda would participate.

But BFA technical director Derek Broadley said the association were "perplexed" by the reports and said the BFA had not be invited to join the Caribbean division.

"It's perplexing for us and I've certainly heard nothing about it," he said.

"There have certainly been no discussions about it."

Joe Serralta, president of Puerto Rico's Football Federation, said he has been pushing for the league's creation since 2004.

"With a population of more than 40 million people, this Caribbean league can and should be developed as one of the most important of the CONCACAF," he said.

Caribbean officials needed the United Soccer Leagues (USL) – the largest organisation of elite-level soccer in North America, but which also oversees leagues in Canada and the Caribbean – to agree to the creation of the new competition.

The agreement between the USL and the Puerto Rico Soccer League will give the island's eight club teams – plus USL's Puerto Rico Islanders – an opportunity for more games and exposure.
