Cavaliers complete double with crushing win

Unbeaten Spring Garden Cavaliers completed the double over title rivals Forties with a crushing nine-wicket victory that has virtually guaranteed them their first Commercial Cricket League championship.

"Spring Garden have a strong team this year and I think a well-deserved title is in the bag for them," conceded Forties' captain Gordon Campbell after Sunday's match at Shelly Bay.

Cavaliers now lead defending champions Forties by four points with a match in hand.

Meanwhile, third-placed North Village, who face Cavaliers at Garrison Field this weekend, overcame an explosive start by BC Allrounders, with Dano Outerbridge hitting a half-century, to record a four-wicket victory at Garrison Field after slow bowler Randy Smith claimed an impressive seven-wicket haul.

Forties, who needed at least a winning draw to keep Cavaliers in check, chose to bat but struggled against some tight bowling and hit only three boundaries before being dismissed for 141 in the 41st over.

Campbell and Simon Jones produced an opening stand of 46, each making 21, and Kavi Selvarajah made 25 at number four but their departures triggered a collapse that saw six wickets tumble for the addition of just 29 runs before the tail wagged.

Lloyd Morrison and man of the match Jeff DeSilva were the pick of the Cavaliers attack, claiming three for 33 from 14 overs and three for 32 from ten respectively, while Barry Richards chipped in with two for 19 from 3.5 overs.

A century stand – their third of the season – between DeSilva and Donovan Livingston laid the foundation for Cavaliers' victory before DeSilva, whose unbeaten 102-ball 64 contained one six and five fours, and Richard Foulds (19 not out) sealed the ten points in the 35th. Campbell claimed Forties' only wicket, bowling Livingston for an 80-ball 49 which included four fours, when the total was 114.

"Yatin Gawas bowled particularly well but was unlucky not to get any wickets for 23 in 11 overs," said Campbell.

"We were strait-jacketed by some very tight bowling, especially by Lloyd, who bowled 14 overs unchanged. The field was greener after the rains of last week so runs were a little harder to come by. We were saved too many blushes by an adventuresome last-wicket stand of 26 by Ahmed Holder (16) and Raghu Dubagunta (13).

"Jeff and Donovan batted patiently for Cavaliers and, apart from a few good lbw shouts, didn't give too many chances until they reached 100," added Campbell.

Said Foulds: "Cavaliers were without three main bowlers, Trevor Haynes, Craig Smith and Steve Diamond, but still managed to bowl Forties out for a second time this season.

"All our bowlers chipped in, with Lloyd being the pick of them. He hasn't had much bowling this year but used swing, coupled with excellent line and length, to stifle Forties' batsmen before they got going. Jeff also had some bowling to do, and showed what a fine all-rounder he is, ably aided by wicketkeeper Alan Boyce, who picked up one catch standing up, and an even more impressive leg-side stumping to dismiss Simon Jones.

"Forties' total was unlikely to pose problems for Cavailers given our depth, and once again rock-solid openers Donovan and Jeff gave us the best of starts, and for the third time this season, posted a century opening partnership."

Skipper Outerbridge got BCA Allrounders off to a flying start against Village, hitting 61 after the 50 was posted in eight overs, but once he and fellow opener Nathan Webb (20) went the innings subsided to 133 in the 30th over.

Randy Smith's seven for 54 came from 10.5 overs while fellow slow bowler Dion Ball, Jr. took three for 28 from 11.

In reply, opener David Scraders made 20 but Village slipped to 40 for three before a 54-run fourth-wicket partnership between skipper Allen Walker, who made 42 not out, and Rudy Smith (27) put their side on the path to victory, which was completed in the 34th over. Worrell Bean took two for 32 from ten.

"BC Allrounders came out firing as they scored 50 runs off our pace attack in eight overs," said Walker.

"With an introduction of spin, we were able to put pressure on them as their only answer was to try and hit everything to the boundary.

"Thanks to a great knock from captain Dano Outerbridge, he was able to provide them with a little hope. Once his wicket went with the score on 85 the rest of the order collapsed.

"BC played a very good game but the 12 extra overs they gave us really made the difference in our run chase as it gave us ample time to cruise to victory. We were very fortunate as both our spinners, Randy and Dion, really bowled exceptionally well," added Walker.
