Clay is left out

the Bermuda national cricket team was solved last night when all three all-rounders -- vice-captain Clevie Wade, Noel Gibbons and Arnold Manders -- were named for today's tour opener against Jamaica at Sabina Park.

The surprise is that Clay Smith has been left out with the selectors deciding to go with left-arm spinner Bruce Perinchief as the sixth bowler. Terry Burgess and Anthony Edwards have been charged with leading the bowling attack.

The team in probable batting order is as follows: Wendell Smith, Allen Richardson, Albert Steede, Charlie Marshall, Arnold Manders, Noel Gibbons, Clevie Wade, Dean Minors, Anthony Edwards, Terry Burgess, Bruce Perinchief.

A full-strength Jamaican side will line up against Bermuda in the 50-overs match, which will be played under Gettes Grant rules. Test ace Courtney Walsh arrived on schedule yesterday and will captain the team while Jimmy Adams was due to touch down late last night from England.

Other than the chief stars from the full West Indies team, there are quite a few others that the Bermudian players will be familiar with, including openers Delroy Morgan and Robert Haynes, paceman Franklyn Rose and spinner Nehemiah Perry. Bermuda's batsmen in particular finally got some relief, ahead of what is expected to be a stiff test, when the team's first net session was held yesterday at Sabina Park. The team had earlier worked out in the field at Michael Holding's Melbourne Cricket Club.

Though the batting and bowling was up to standard team manager McDonald Swan voiced similiar concerns about the catching.

"It is something which we have to tighten up on in time for tomorrow (today) because catches win matches,'' said Swan.

Swan picked out opener Wendell Smith and Arnold Manders as the batsmen who more than held their own, but added, "Anthony Edwards and Terry Burgess looked good in their bowling and the spinners Del Hollis and Bruce Perinchief held their line pretty good.''
