Colts reign supreme in the East
St. David's 0
St. George's Colts 3
This decisive three-goal victory at Lord's yesterday saw visiting St. George's Colts show home side St. David's who were the bosses of the East.
In fact, such was the dominance of Colts that with more luck on their side they could have walked away from the fixture with a far more comprehensive triumph.
Even the most ardent St. David's fan would have agreed that if Clay Darrell had been more fortunate in front of goal, the visitors would have probably beaten out of sight.
The striker had at least two shots blocked at point blank range by goalkeeper Javon Minors who advanced off his line to pull of sensational saves and then put an angled shots inches over the goal while directing other efforts either wide or high when well positioned.
Even with all of these misses, Darrell looked explosive at times as he ventured into goalscoring positions and was never shy of challenging a defender.
St. David's, on the other hand, were sluggish much of the time after looking competitive in the opening minutes.
Things didn't always go St. George's way, not after they had blown two scoring chances, Mackie Crane responsible for both.
After 11 minutes, he struck a fierce shot against the post from 16 yards and then four minutes later he watched in agony as Minors advanced off his line to block his shot.
St. George's went ahead after 19 minutes when St. David's skipper Dimitri Butterfield handled in the box allowing Jahron Dickinson to net from the penalty box.
After 29 minutes, Darrell should have made it 2-0 when Crane sent him a through ball but the striker hurried his shot from an angle high over the bar.
The visitors continued to hold the whip and after 42 minutes the inevitable second goal appeared to be coming but Darrell this time put another angled shot wide from 15 yards.
The lead at the half should have been far more commanding since the home side had done very little, allowing St. George's to take the upperhand.
After 53 minutes hard working midfielder Jarreau Hayward masterfully slotted a defence-splittling through ball for Darrell to gain possession but the forward placed his shot past the far post.
But St. David's, who up to this point had accomplished very little up front aside from isolated raids which seldom worried the defence, had their first real shot on goal when Angelo Cannonier dribbled between two defenders only to hurry his 17-yarder over the goal.
A minute later Darrell watched as Minors advanced to throw his falling body on the ground to block his drive from close range. However, after 68 minutes the hard-working Darrell was to get his deserved strike, this time after some more handywork by Hayward.
Now with the commanding two-goal lead and never looking threatened by the home side, St. George's were in full control.
But they may still have a long way to go before convincing fans they are going to be competitive in the Premier Division with other sides also more than capable of exposing St. David's' weakenesses in defence.
St.George's third goal came from winger Jahron Dickinson who suprisingly had a rather quiet game prior to his injury-time strike.
