Colts score upset against champs
(After extra time) Devonshire Colts ended Somerset's two year reign as Martonmere Cup champions when Ellington Weldon's third goal of the season in the first minute of the second period of extra time finally decided this hard-fought battle.
Colts, the first winners of the cup back in the 1972-73 season, are through to their first Martonmere Cup final since 1978-79.
The underdogs showed more urgency and determination right from the opening whistle as Somerset's problems began after just 90 seconds when Dwight Basden got the worst of a tackle from fullback Keenan Burchall. The striker limped around for several minutes before eventually being replaced by Steven Arorash in the 12th minute.
Three minutes after that, pumped-up Colts broke the deadlock with a smartly-taken goal by Craig Smith. Fullback Leonard Hypolite supplied an inch perfect cross from the left following a throw-in and Smith, with a free-header in front of goal, beat the stranded Antoine Swan.
Colts were denied a second goal just over a minute later when Joey Weeks' shot hit the near post after Smith had laid on an early cross from the right.
Midway through the first half Somerset started to offer some resistence as Trevor Dickenson's long range shot in the 24th minute was tipped over the bar by keeper Antoine Lightbourne.
Three minutes later the Colts lead was gone when Lightbourne was troubled by a cross to the far post from the left side and after the ball was not cleared.
Rodney Bascome stabbed it in from close range.
For the remainder of the half Somerset were matching their opponents thrust for thrust, the goal obviously having been the boost they needed.
The standard slipped in the second half though it began promisingly when Somerset's Lamaul Crofton drove high and wide from a good position after being set up near the edge of the box in the 48th minute. Billy Kirkpatrick of Somerset and Keenan Burchall of Colts were both booked for fouls, following Craig Smith (dissent) into referee Rex Osborne's book.
Both goalkeepers made important saves late in the match to keep their teams in contention as extra time seemed inevitable.
Jay Bean of Colts was carried off with a foot injury in the fifth minute of extra time as injuries began to crop up, with Colts then going down to 10 men when Ellington Weldon went off for treatment for a leg injury. Soon after Keenan Burchall went down with cramp.
Weldon, the division's top scorer last season with 15 goals, laboured on and got his reward just moments into the second period of extra time when he met Craig Smith's inswinging corner from the right and forced it over the line at the far post.
But Somerset refused to concede defeat and two minutes later a quick break saw Duane DeRoza sent Kirkpatrick clear only to see his shot smash against the crossbar with Lightbourne beaten.
