Cougars keep their slim title hopes alive
It was rarely pretty, and raised more questions than providing answers, but Devonshire Cougars won't care, they finally got a league win last night.
Two Aljame Zuill penalties, and a Kwame Steede header were enough to help them squeeze past ten-man Southampton Rangers, keeping thier slim title chances alive in the process.
In a game characterised by scrappy football, and individual errors, Cougars came out on top because they made one error less than Rangers.
The visiting side actually took the lead as the first half came to a close, and given the nature of the encounter it seemed only fitting that it was an own-goal that broke the deadlock.
Jahma Charles' under-hit free kick looked like causing little danger in the Cougars area, until Joshua Butterfield's attempted to head the ball clear and only succeded in putting it into his own net.
Cougars needed just ten minutes after the break to draw themselves level, but they had Rangers goalkeeper Jason Smith to thank for getting them back into the game.
Coming to collect an easy ball at the edge of his area with Zuill lurking nearby, Smith somehow managed to drop the ball, and then compounded the mistake by hauling down the Cougars striker in his desperation to retrieve it.
Smith was sent off, Zuill scored from the spot, and the home side were back into it.
They doubled their lead four minutes later when Zuill was upended in the box by Charles, and calmly slotted the ball past substitute goalkeeper Gerald Simons.
Steede looked to have put the game beyond Rangers soon after when he bravely outjumped Simons to score the third.
However Cougars' suspect defence was exposed by another Rangers free-kick, which Keemo Smith scored from, and in a frantic finish the visiting team charged forward searching for an equaliser that never came.
