Crosdale's century can't save Jamaicans

Newcomer Simroy Crosdale bludgeoned his way to an explosive unbeaten century batting at number nine for Jamaican Association but still ended up a loser as Terry Ward guided Watford Sports Club to victory in a tense Commercial Cricket League finish at the Royal Naval Field on Sunday.

Current leaders and defending champions Hemisphere Leg Trappers were indebted to an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 75 between Justin Freisenbruch and all-rounder James Swan to carry them to victory over Devonshire Stars at Nationals.

Forties ran up a massive 263 for four against plucky nine-man Sandys Community Youth Club before emerging winners by 133 runs at Shelly Bay while in Sunday's other match West Indian Association maintained their 100 percent record with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over St. David's at Lord's.

Crosdale's blistering 105 not out, which included 12 fours and five massive sixes, rescued Jamaican Association from a precarious 103 for eight and steered his side to a challenging total of 245. Sehwell Millwood was the next highest scorer with 20 while there were two wickets apiece for skipper Terry Corday, David DeSilva and Blake West.

Opener Terry Ward spearheaded Watford's reply, hitting 16 fours and a six before he was trapped leg before for 97 at 209 for seven but the west enders edged home with 14 balls to spare.

There were 38 extras in the Jamaican innings and 45 -- including 33 wides -- in the Watford reply. Michael Campbell (three for 81) was among the sufferers as he took 13 balls to complete one of his 13.4 overs.

"It was a very exciting game to watch and I thought I had it in the bag and was ready to get out the champagne,'' said Jamaican Association spokesman Glenmore Barrett afterwards. "But even though we lost I see potential in the boys.'' Only George Cannonier, who hit five fours in his 47, offered any real resistance for St. David's who were dismissed for 133 in 37 overs, Junior Watts snapping up five for 35 in 11 overs and fellow medium pacer Jerry Callender taking four for 44 in 12 overs.

Opener Patrick Hamlett hit seven fours and a six in his 46 while Randy Liverpool, who came in at number four, struck eight fours and a five in his 51 as West Indian Association coasted home in the 22nd over to notch up their third successive victory.

Swan (three for 22 from nine overs) and three for 40 from Roddy Moore, who also bowled nine overs, and two for 21 by Gary Knight helped Leg Trappers dismiss Devonshire Stars for 128 in the 32nd over, Frankie Simons making 21 and Shane Grant 20.

But the modest victory target looked a daunting one for Leg Trappers as they plunged to 56 for six before Freisenbruch, with an unbeaten 38, and Swan (30 not out) spared the champions' blushes by carrying the total to 131 for six in 33 overs. Cory Smith (two for 37 from 13 overs) and Worrell (two for 42 from 10 overs) were the pick of the Stars attack.

Forties made Sandys Community Youth Club pay dearly for turning up two short as they piled up a massive 263 for four after slipping to 21 for two. Alan Lamb, cutting ferociously, hammered eight fours in his 87 while skipper Gordon Campbell hit four fours in his 61 before being forced to retire hurt with a knee injury.

Rohaan Simons, in his first game of the season, joined in the run spree, clouting two sixes and two fours in a quickfire unbeaten 45 as he and Oscar Ondrade (20 not out) added an unbeaten 67 for the fifth wicket. Rudolph Simons was the most successful bowler with two for 69 from 14 overs.

Trenton Tankard (18) and Torie Hollis (23) got the Youth Club off to a flying start with 42 in the first eight overs but when Brian Holdipp (three for 27) had Tankard caught in the slips Forties put the brakes on the scoring.

John Martin (18) and Raymond Burchall (27) carried the total into three figures but Holdipp returned for a second spell to claim two wickets with successive balls to end the Youth Club's resistance in the 35th over.
