David Bascome eyes Guam ISL expansion
By 2012 Island Soccer League (ISL) commissioner David Bascome hopes to have expanded his six-a-side tournament into Guam a US territory in the western Pacific Ocean.
Guam may seem an unlikely destination for the small-sided league but Bascome believes the “football loving” tropical Island would feast upon the fast-paced game which he introduced to Bermuda in 2007.
The indoor soccer stalwart held talks with the Guam Football Federation (GFF) on a recent visit and said they were “very interested” in hosting the ISL and had invited him to return in April to hold a two-and-a-half week coaching clinic.
“I’ve just come back from Guam and we’re actually in talks about setting up an Island Soccer League (ISL) there by 2012,” said the Baltimore Blast assistant coach. “My goal is to spread the ISL and we’ve had a great response from Guam they love their football.
“I’ll be doing a coaching clinic in Guam in April and I’ll be working very closely with their football federation. Hopefully I can help them develop their football.”
The former Bermuda international visited Guam along with boxing promoter Don Elbuam as sporting mentors on behalf of the Champions4Champions legends of sport a non-profit organisation he was inducted into last year.
Bascome said he would be establishing his Hope4Life charity in Guam early next year and hoped that the ISL would follow.
“The Guam Government wanted some sporting mentors to come down and got in touch with the Ed Tech group in Baltimore, who then contacted the Champions4Champions,” he said.
“The initial setup was for us to go down there and put on a few clinics and help the young people. When they heard about the Hope4Life and what it’s designed to do, helping young people, they found out more about the ISL. With Guam being a US territory it will be great for the Hope4Life to be affiliated with the US.”
A long-term vision for Bascome is to have a tri-nations ISL competition including Bermuda and two other Caribbean Islands.
He said: “It’s going to be a long process but I’d like to build a three nations cup to give young people hope, not just in Bermuda but in other countries as well.”
Guam is one of five US territories with an established civilian government and is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands. It has a population of 178,000 with tourism its main source of income followed by the US military.
