Somerset Eagles achieved promotion but will have to wait a little longer to get their hands on the First Division title after being held to a draw by Prospect.

They could still clinch the title this weekend though despite having a bye, if their nearest rivals St. George's drop points.

Prospect's players wore black armbands last night at Devonshire Rec. in the memory of ex-player Kevin Mooney who died after crashing his motorcycle on Monday morning.

It was a scrappy game, not made any easier by the bumpy and uneven surface at the Rec. with Prospect's physical brand of play nullifying Eagles' usual slick passing game.

But although Eagles couldn't break the deadlock, a point was enough to guarantee them 3 p.m. football on Sunday afternoon's next season.

Eagles coach Kenny Thompson praised his players for their efforts this campaign but warned them not to ease off just yet.

"Our number one objective at the start of the season was to achieve promotion and we've now accomplished that," said Thompson. "We've only lost one league game all season. But we're not taking anything for granted just yet. We still have to secure the title and there are two games left.

"Three years of hard work has now paid off and it's been a long, long time since Eagles were last in the top division – I can't remember when."

Thompson said Prospect posed his team problems with their physicality.

"It was a difficult match tonight. The pitch is not good and favoured the more physical team and that wasn't us."
