Pat Rafter and partner Paul Kilderry were knocked out in the first round of the doubles. South Africans Jeff Coetzee and Brent Haygarth broke the hearts of the Rafter fans who packed the centre court by beating the Aussies 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

They broke Rafter's serve to take the first set and though the Aussies fought back to take the second, the South Africans romped to victory by winning five games in a row to take the third set.

Despite losing, Rafter showed enough to suggest he is well on the way to recovery from a troublesome shoulder injury, thrilling the crowd with some brilliant volleys and devastating backhand returns.
