Former Toronto FC teenager Kilian Elkinson has not ruled out pledging his allegiance to Bermuda, leaving the door open for a national team call-up.

Bermuda-born Elkinson, who is also eligible to play for Australia and Republic of Ireland, has already represented the Island at youth level alongside full internationals Reggie Lambe, Tumani Steede and Nakhi Wells.

The former PHC and North Village youth team player moved to Canada in 2005 but still considers Bermuda his home and was set for an Under-20 debut in last summer's World Cup qualifiers before passport complications scuppered his hopes.

"I still think of Bermuda as home and it would be nice to play for them one day," said the 18-year-old.

"I played for Bermuda's youth teams under Kenny Thompson and toured Holland. We had a really talented team with the likes of Reggie Lambe, who is doing well at Ipswich Town, Tumani Steede and Nahki Wells.

"Jack Castle spoke to me about playing for the Under-20s in their World Cup qualifiers in Cayman Islands but it was not possible. It was something to do with my passport and couldn't get sorted out in time."

Elkinson, who signed a development contract with Toronto FC last April, will not return to the BMO Field for pre-season camp following the Major League Soccer's (MLS) decision to scrap their reserve division.

It represents a real blow for the diminutive left-back who will now try his luck in England after setting his sights on signing for a Championship club.

"It would have been nice to get another season training on a daily basis with Toronto's first team players," said the ex-Warwick Academy and Saltus pupil. "I played a few games for the reserves but the schedule was very irregular so I didn't get the chance to prove myself.

"With the MLS scrapping their reserve teams and cutting back on young players all I could do is train and it just wouldn't be beneficial for me."

He added: "At the moment I'm preparing for the new season with Toronto University and then I'll head to England. I have a few contacts through Toronto FC and I gather the Championship is the equivalent of the MLS, so that's something I'm looking at."

During his time at Toronto, Elkinson rubbed shoulders with former English club professionals Danny Dichio, Carl Robinson and Jim Brennan and describes the brief, but memorable experience as a privilege.

"I learned a great deal from playing alongside the likes of Carl Robinson, who still plays for Wales, and Jim Brennan who played for many English clubs.

"Carl is still a great player and he would always being giving you little tips. It was a great experience for me and I count myself privileged."

Last week Bermuda Football Association (BFA) revealed that an Under-23 national team would play up to ten matches against Bermuda Hogges' USL-D2 opposition this summer.

BFA technical director Derek Broadley has not yet seen Elkinson play but said he planned to contact him soon regarding his future availability.

"Building up a data-base of all Bermuda overseas-based players is high on my priorities," said Broadley. "I'll be looking to contact Kilian Elkinson – he's a player we need to bring under our radar."
