Hubbard storms to impressive victory

Cyclist Elliot Hubbard solidified his position at the top of the standings in the Bermuda Bicycle Association's Hill Climb Series when he put in another impressive display of climbing on the way to winning the second event of the three-race series at Harrington Hundreds Hill on Sunday.

Following his victory in the previous week's event up Sayle Road where the first three finishers were separated by a single second, the former professional rider left no doubt about who is the man to beat on Sunday as he crested the top of the tough climb in an impressive time of one minute, 18.53 seconds.

In a reversal of positions from Sayle Road, Darren (Shakee) Glasford overcame Arthur Pitcher, recording times of 1.22.10 and 1.24.54 respectively setting them apart from the rest of the field with junior Alex Godfrey again showing he is the one to watch in the future, recording a time of 1.27.17.

With the final event taking place this Sunday at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel on arguably the toughest of the three climbs, Hubbard will have a five second overall lead in the standings over Glasford with Pitcher a further two seconds back.

As the holder of the fastest time ever recorded for the climb that has stood the test of time since his days as a full-time rider, Hubbard will be a hot favourite and it would be a major surprise if he did not lift the trophy at the end of the day as the series winner.

However, whether or not he makes it three wins in a row may depend on the legs of arguably the Island's top climber Mark Hatherely.

The diminutive rider who has been untouchable in recent years was away for the first two events of the series and although he cannot qualify for the overall position he will be looking to take the honours this weekend, setting the stage for an exciting finale.

Other winners at the weekend were Karen Bordage in the Women's Open following her victory on Sayle Road.

Newcomer Treshun Correia took honours in the boys 12 and over, whose time of 1.34.75 would have been good enough for eighth in the men's Open category

Sophie Adams won the female 12 and over and Justin Ferreira continued his impressive rides, winning the 12 and under male category.

This Sunday's event starts at 8.30 a.m. at the bottom of the Southampton Fairmont Hotel hill.
