I am relieved as new owners take charge
Myself and many other West Ham fans breathed a sigh of relief after David Sullivan and David Gold came in and bought 50 percent of the club. They were the former owners of Birmingham but they are east end boys at heart and hopefully this will now add some stability to the club – something we have not had for a while. When a club is financially unstable it cane lead to problems on and off the field. Now that the two are at the held of the Hammers the club can plans a bit more.
Both have said that they will not take a wage and that they are not looking to sell any players which is good news. They also said they want to invest in new players – particularly strikers. I have heard the names of Blackburn's Benni McCarthy and Spurs' Robbie Keane mentioned. Both would be great to get.
And more importantly the new owners are very happy with manager Gianfranco Zola and his assistant Steve Clarke.
There had been people speculating recently that players like Matthew Upson, goalkeeper Robert Green, striker Carlton Cole and midfielder Scott Parker would have to be sold off to help balance the books. Now it seems they will stay and Hammer fans can only be thankful for that. Now we can concentrate of moving up the table. Last weekend we travelled to Aston Villa and managed a point – not many teams can do that so the future is looking a bit more rosy.
That Aston Villa team gave a fantastic display of football in mid-week when they won 6-4 at the Carling Cup semi-final second leg to beat Blackburn and advance to the final where they will meet either Manchester City or Manchester United who played their first leg this week with Carlos Tevez scoring twice against his old team for a 2-1 victory.
I gather that United's Gary Neville said before the match that Tevez was not worth the amount of money that City paid for him and bad blood has broken out between the former teammates. Well if I was Neville I would keep my trap shut – he may be chasing Tevez all over the field in the second leg next week. Always let your football do the talking.
n One game not to miss this weekend will be the clash of the Milans – Inter and AC take on each other in a top-of-the-table match.
Last weekend AC Milan beat Siena 4-0 and although Siena had a man sent off it was Ronaldinho who really put the nail in the coffin with a hat-trick. And he could have had more.
He really is playing some beautiful football this season and I hope Dunga takes him to South Africa.
At the beginning of the season many AC Milan fans were unhappy with new manager Leonardo. Now look at where AC Milan are – six points behind leaders Inter but AC Milan also have a game in hand. If they beat Inter, who have been leaking a few goals lately, on Saturday and then win their game in hand it is all even. And AC Milan still have Brazilian striker Pato out.
Ronaldinho scored a penalty, then a rare header from a Beckham corner but it was his third goal that was a thing of beauty – a curling strike from the edge of the area.
n Like AC Milan, many were giving Arsenal a hard time earlier this season. Look where they are now – joint top with Chelsea who scored a seven goals against Sunderland last weekend.
This year Arsenal also seem a bit tougher – a bit more resilient.
Last weekend Arsenal travelled to Bolton and won 2-0. Then in mid-week they hosted Bolton in a make-up league game and came from 2-0 behind to win 4-2. They really looked good coming back like that playing beautiful Gunners' football. I know that victory pleased my good friend Denton D. I just want to tell him it is nice to see Arsenal on top right now!
On Sunday Arsenal travel to Stoke in the fourth round of the FA Cup and it could get a little physical.
In fact most of the matches this weekend are FA Cup fixtures except the league match with Manchester United hosting Hull. If United win they go on top. But hopefully there will be some upsets in the FA Cup – that is something which makes the competition great.
Accrington Stanley take on Premier League Fulham while Aston Villa host Brighton.
And Leeds will hope to continue their dream run when they travel to Spurs.
n One of the great Somerset men, Anthony (Sonny) Roberts, died this week and my sympathies go out to his family – particularly his sons Tony and Mel.
Sonny was a real good guy – good cricketer and sportsman. He was in his early 90s so as we say in cricket, 'he had a good innings'. Sonny will be missed.
