If change is the answer, why wait?

Change, a word that has been very popular in the Democratic Party in America and is now the focus of the topic this week, especially with what has been absorbing our energy lately in sports and our social environment.

As stated in the dictionary, change ¿ to become or make different, to substitute or replace something, variance from routine or transition from something.

I know sometimes we sit back and feel change is not needed, if at work, sports and education or our lives. What is great though is accept when we need change because it goes a long way.

If I have been a bad sportsman and realised that I have been bringing down the team and have cost problems because of my actions. Do I stay the same way? Or change?

If I am head of a club or business and know deep down that nothing has moved since I have been in charge, nothing has developed and I have cost groups to divide. Do I stay and enjoy the perks and watch it all fade in misery? Or change and remove myself or work hard to fix it.

If I am a coach and have been focusing on winning in the wrong areas, I have been disregarding the basic fundamentals of the game, been disorganised in training and tend to show no interest in players discipline. Do I stay the same and hope that winning the games would form a cloud over my weakness? Or change and realise that if my players learn discipline and organisation on the field it would help them off.

If I am a parent that has not been putting my time and interest in my own daughter or son, but enjoying when others praise me for doing a good job with them, when I know deep down inside that I had played no role in their progress, but just been paying the toll fees each month. Do I continue to apply the fake smile when I am getting the praises? Or change my ways and make a difference knowing that it is never too late to change the face of whom I am.

Change does not come easy because we have to be willing to accept the things we have not done or the things that we have. We have to understand the reason for changing or wanting change. We must be honest with ourselves and remember that our word is golden.

Let's take soccer in Bermuda for example: We have been crying out that things need to change for years but some are not willing to make sacrifices for change, some still selfish in their ways, some still in power knowing that they should not be there or have not made a difference. This does not mean that things are not moving forward because people are trying to do everything in their power to make it work and those are not ones who have to change, it is the ones who do not accept what you are doing, the ones who are stuck in their ways, the ones who talk about the negatives and hate to see you succeed. They must change their thought process and realise that working together helps in many ways. Sport has been known to unite and save communities all over the world and we have to do the same in our own country.

My leaders, coaches, bosses, parents and young people and yes, myself. I know some of us have been stuck in our ways for many years, but, please understand change does not hurt, not willing to change hurts many, fear not to change, change is good, change is needed.

If you feel that you do not need change and things are going well, that is great, hopefully you are in a position to affect change for others or for sports.

As someone said to me last week "Note to Self- you cannot save everyone". Yes I do agree, so I say to you "Note to self- do what it takes to help save more" and if change is that answer please change soon.

Until next time.
