IN SHORT

Bermuda sprinter Jeneko Place returns to international action this week at the World Junior Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.

Place, 16, enhanced his glowing reputation at the recent CAC Junior Games in Dominican Republic where he won a silver in the Under-17 boys 200 metres (21.91 seconds) and bronze in the 100 metres (11.02).

He has already quailed for this summer's World Youth Olympics in Singapore.

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson is confident he can live up his billing as the eighth best sprinter in his age group.

"I'm confident that Jeneko will perform as he has throughout this season as he is ranked in the top eight in the world for his age group," she said. "I believe he is going to continue to run faster in the 200m."

Jeneko's first day of competition is scheduled for Thursday.

Held bi-annually, the World Junior Championships are open to junior athletes under the age of 19.

Burch misses Games final

Bermuda swimmer Roy Allen Burch narrowly missed out on reaching the finals of the 100 metres freestyle at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico.

Burch, who has represented Bermuda at the Olympics and Pan-Am Games, finished two tenths of a second outside the qualifying time on Sunday.

Another member of Team Bermuda to almost reach the finals was Julian Fletcher who was also two tenths of a second off the mark in the 50 metres breastroke, despite swimming his fastest ever time.

Veteran Lisa Blackburn recorded a quicker time in the 200 metres breastroke than the one she posted at the recent Caribbean International Swimming Championships (CISC) but it was still not good enough to make the finals

Head coach Ben Smith said: "The level of the competition is very high. With teams like Mexico and Venezuela having very strong swimmers."

Last night Kiera Aitken was scheduled to compete in the final of the 50 metres backstroke.

Wade-Fray double

GB Standard Life Women – featuring Bermuda's Jeneya Wade-Fray – completed a weekend basketball double against Portugal with a pair of wins at the Surrey Sports Park, England.

Coach Tom Maher's team produced a storming second half to win 72-50 on Saturday evening, before beating Portugal by 73-65 on Sunday.

The team are looking to qualify for next year's Eurobasket Championships in Poland and have a busy schedule ahead with games against Belgium and Holland.

Wade-Fray was called up by Great Britain earlier this year following her outstanding season with the University of Tennessee team in Chattanooga, USA.
