ISL gets go-ahead to use National Sports Centre

Island Soccer League (ISL) Commissioner David Bascome is celebrating after being given the green light to schedule his tournament matches at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

The decision came after tough negotiations with the trustees of the NSC to use the facilities for a two-month period.

With the national team still involved in World Cup qualifying and the Bermuda Hogges playing at the same venue, there seemed to be no room to accommodate the ISL.

However, with help from the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, the League were given the go-ahead to use the facilities for a second season.

"It has been a long process but I am glad that the schedule has been worked out," said a relieved Bascome.

"With all the events going on at the National Stadium we knew that it was going to be a challenge to get a full schedule or just one that would allow us to have the majority of the games on the weekends.

"We are pleased to say that we will have a home for our games for the 2008 ISL season. It was important that we play the ISL games at the best venue as it helps to create the professional atmosphere.

"I am happy that the ISL and the NSC have reached an agreed schedule which will allow the players, fans and sponsors to enjoy another ISL season."

The biggest difference from last year will be the switch of games from weekends to weekdays.

Bascome stated that although the change might have some sort of impact on the attendance, he believed everyone involved with the ISL was happy with the set-up.

"How the schedule is shaped out, most of the games will be on weekdays and we understand that we have to work hard to keep our supporters' interest high.

"But this means a lot for the ISL as it will allow us to play once again at the best facility on the Island.

"With the schedule in place we can now focus on the marketing of the games and players."

The ISL season is set to start on June 2 with the full schedule of games set to be released on Friday.
