Island set to host Caribbean Champs

Bermuda will host the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships later this month with the regions best riders set to take part in the two-day event.

The fourth edition of the Championships will see 70 representatives from 13 countries do battle for bragging rights in their respective age groups.

There will be three age groups, girl's 15 to 18, boys 15 to 16 and 17 to 18, with each group competing in the same races but different distances.

Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) president Peter Dunne believes the event will be a great experience for the local junior riders to test their ability against Caribbean competition.

He reckons Caribbean heavyweights Puerto Rico, Barbados and Trinidad will pose the greatest threat.

"We are just awaiting confirmation from the Bermuda Police and Works and Engineering for the roads and we will be set," said Dunne.

"There are about 30 countries that make up the Caribbean Cycling Federation (CCF) and for us it is a great level of competition for our junior riders. This the fourth year that it will be held and the first time it will be held here.

"We want to show that we can not only win championships but also host them, so this will be an exciting time for us.

"The powerhouses of the Caribbean like Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Barbados will be here so it will be a good experience for our riders.

"Corkscrew Hill will be a major test, but you must remember that hosting an event there will be differences in the level of experience."

The two-day event starts, from July 25-26, with the 11-mile time trial.
