Jamaican side give St David's a pasting
Jamaican Association swept to the top of the Commercial Cricket League by beating the rain to thrash nine-man St. David's by seven wickets.
After dismissing St. David's for 85 in the 31st over at Garrison Field, Jamaican Association romped to victory in just 10.4 overs.
The win left the Jamaicans four points clear of long-time leaders Forties and in sight of their first league title since 2004 with one intriguing round of matches remaining.
"We're very confident of winning the league – there's no turning back now," said Jamaican Association manager Glenmore Barrett.
In Sunday's other make-up match, heavy rain washed out Spring Garden Cavaliers' hopes of beating ten-man BC Allrounders at Warren Simmons Community Field, despite a five-wicket haul by Ishwar Narayanan.
Each club picked up five points.
Meanwhile, North Village have leapfrogged over Cavaliers into third place after their appeal against St. David's – for fielding first-team player Landro Minors in a match last month that the East Enders won – was upheld at a monthly league meeting last night.
"We're not going to fight that," conceded St. David's spokesman Otis Minors.
Junior Lindo followed up his five-wicket haul in the Jamaicans' previous league victory over Ernst & Young by claiming four for 47 in nine overs while Michael Campbell took three for –30 in 10.3 overs in a match reduced to 35 overs a side after opposition St. David's turned up late – and two short.
Gregory Outerbridge topscored with 22.
Opener Sefton Hall, who struck four fours and a six before being run out for 34, and Daniel Edwards, whose 36 included five fours and a six, teamed up to get the Jamaicans home in a hurry.
At the opposite end of the island, left-hander Worrell Bean, batting at number five, smashed six sixes and two fours in his 56 as BC Allrounders were dismissed for 147 in the 25th over.
Opener Dano Outerbridge made 28 and Vance Hill 20. Narayanan claimed five for 24 from 6.3 overs and Boobalan Kannan two for 30 from three.
Cavaliers had reached 48 for two from 11 overs when the match was abandoned. Anthony Brathwaite was on 19 not out after openers Patrick Hamlett (15) and Donovan Livingston (three) went cheaply.
Only Forties, the 2006 champions, can stop Jamaican Association winning the league but they face a tough fight against Cavaliers while the Jamaicans can't be certain of success either as they take on defending champions Village in a fitting finale to the league programme. The other game that weekend also features St. David's against Ernst & Young.
These matches will be followed by the League Cup semi-finals on August 24 and the first round of the Knockout a week later.
Defending League Cup champions are Spring Garden Cavaliers, who previously played as West Indian Association, while Forties won last season's Knockout competition for a record 14th time.
