John Stout, forcing a series of errors from opponent Mark Rousselle, clawed back his 15 point handicap to emerge a 3-1 winner in Division One as play
courts.
In Division Three, Jill Curran survived her second physical five-game encounter to defeat Conor Ryan 15-14 in the decider, and in the same division Donovan Furbert needed all five games to get past Ailsa Campbell, winning 15-13 in the last.
Division Four play saw 1995 winner Lea Suriwka suffer a 2-3 defeat at the hands of Mark Outerbridge with the latter taking the deciding game 15-14.
Chris Defoa and junior player Nina Harvey were also stretched in five-game marathons against Kim Stephens and Paul McLeod respectively.
BRIDGE BDG Bermuda blitzed South Africa but were then well beaten by Poland and the Czech Republic on the final day of qualifying games in the World Bridge Olympiad in Rhodes, Greece.
The Island team finished with 352 points, ahead of Kenya, Cyprus and Palestine. Seventy one teams entered the Olympiad with France, Russia, Denmark, Italy, Iceland, Indonesia, Poland and Taipei advancing to the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, the Mixed Team Championships began yesterday with Bermuda's team of Roman Smolski, Vera Petty, Joe Wakefield, Marge Way, John Burville and Jean Johnson beating Sweden in their first match of 10 boards, but then losing their second match and drawing the third and fourth.
They ended the day with 61 out of a possible 100 points. Play continues throughout this week.
CROSS COUNTRY CC The third races in the senior and junior cross country series take place at Spittal Pond on Saturday morning, starting at 9.00.
