Khano set to re-sign for Revs

Free agent Khano Smith is set to re-sign for his former club New England Revolution and could be availble for their Major League Soccer (MLS) season opener at LA Galaxy tomorrow night.

The Revs have created a spot on their roster, having waivered defender Gabriel Badilla's contract and, according to The Boston Globe, Smith is his likely replacement.

Smith, who played for the Revs from 2005 to 2008, has been on trial at the Eastern Conference outfit as a non-roster player during pre-season following his brief stint at English League Two side, Linclon City.

He came on as a second-half substitute in Revs' pre-season friendly win over Carolina Railhawks last weekend.

The Globe reported yesterday: "Defender Gabriel Badilla has been waived by the Revolution, a team source confirmed (on) Wednesday night. The move opens a roster spot which is expected to be filled by Khano Smith, who could be available for their season-opening game in Los Angeles Saturday."

Life has hardly been a bed of roses for the 29-year-old winger since leaving the Gillette Stadium nearly 18 months ago.

Traded to New York Red Bulls from Seattle Sounders before playing a competitive match, he struggled to make an impact in the Big Apple and was subsequently cast into the footballing wilderness mid-season by unimpressed coach Juan Carlos Osario.

Disillusioned with the MLS and desperate to resurrect his stuttering career, Smith then packed his bags for England on a mission to win a professional contract.

Although a trial at Shaun Goater's former team Southend United came to nothing, Smith did enough to convince Lincoln City manager Chris Sutton he was worthy of a short-term deal at the League Two club.

And for a while it seemed as though Smith's raw pace and power may be enough to get by in the muck and nettles of the English lower leagues, where finesse and flair are often viewed as a luxury.

Heralded by Sutton after his Imps debut as a "real threat", Smith soon fell out of favour with the ex-England striker and was released by them last month before heading to League One side Brentford where he failed to earn a contract.

After enduring such a difficult time since parting company with Steve Nicol and Co. it is no surprise Smith has returned to his happy hunting ground where he spent four seasons, and played in two successive MLS Cup finals.

n Bermuda's Reggie Lambe was on target in Ipswich Town reserves' 2-1 win over Stevenage Borough on Wednesday night.

Lambe, who netted a hat-trick in the home game against Boro earlier in the season, opened the scoring early in the second half when he finished from close range after good work from Ronan Murray and Ed Upson.

Lee Boylan pulled one back for Boro before Upson scored Town's winner.
