Kirkland finishes with a flourish
Bermuda's Jesse Kirkland bookended his collegiate sailing career with another Team Race National Championship title in Madison, Wisconsin, over the Memorial Day weekend.
Senior skipper Kirkland had previously won the title in his freshmen year at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
St. Mary's have now won the championship five times to reiterate their position as a perennial powerhouse in college sailing.
Kirkland's last collegiate regatta starts today as St. Mary's set out to defend their 2009 Dinghy Championship.
He then returns to Bermuda on Friday and before he and brother Zander head out for their first summer in Europe of 49er training/racing on June 10. The brothers are pushing for the 2012 London Olympics.
St. Mary's head varsity sailing coach, Adam Werblow, said his team's strong work ethic had been the key behind their success in the National Championships.
"There is no easy win. What helped us is that we have a team who have worked together for a very long time," said Werblow.
"We have such a proud tradition and we are thrilled to be able to represent the school and one another.
"There are 30 kids on our team and 2,000 in the school. The 10 kids sailing here are representing the rest and feel really proud to regain the national title we covet so much."
